Games can help you through a tough time?

When you're going through a tough time it's like the whole world is against you, which can be very depressing to say the least. Something I like to do during a tough time is to do something that makes me happy and for me that's playing games. But not multiplayer games just single player games with a big story and a lot of things to do. I'm happy to have Mass Effect Andromeda right now because I'm in need for some distraction!

Games can make a difference?

A friend of mine lost her father several years ago, it was a really tough time for her and she didn't go out much and didn't want to talk to anyone. But she did play a lot of Skyrim, somehow this game gave her comfort and made her feel less alone. This might seem odd to some people but I think that game might have actually helped her climb out of that depression. Because she did something she enjoyed and above all she wasn't every day confronted with the fact that her dad died. Maybe some will say that it's not health to run away from your problems but I doubt that it's always healthy to be surrounded by them either. It feels good to have an escape, a way out of reality and just enjoy a fantasy world. Reality can be devastating and that is why I like playing games that give me a way out, if even for a moment. It's not like I don't want to live my life but I just like being somewhere else for a moment. No I don't have this need to be the hero or be the focus of attention, but in the games I play I help people and I can actually make a difference. In real life that isn't always true, I can't help everyone and sometimes it feels like everything I do is pointless. Of course this is the depression talking but if it helps me playing games to fight back then I don't think that's a bad thing.

Games aren't the solution?

I'm not saying that when you play games you will feel better, but I know that for me and some other people that I know that this has helped. In the end it's still up to you to get through a tough time but games can definitely help. But it will still come down to you to fight through it. So it doesn't help if you only play games and never do anything else. Eventually you will have to let people in, talk about what's going on and find strength in the people that care about you. It's easy to shut yourself off from the rest of the world when you play games, but sooner or later you will have to get back to reality and it's better that you do this sooner than later. Games can help but eventually they aren't the solution, sometimes they can even become part of the problem when you get addicted to playing games. So if playing games helps you through a tough time then that's a good thing, but don't be afraid to step outside and face the world. No matter how dark the days ahead seem, hopefully one day things will be better.
