Movie Monday: Resident Evil the Final Chapter
This is number six in the Resident Evil movie series, but just as the title informs you this is the final chapter. Is this a good ending to the series? Well yes and no, you get some answers and things are tied up but at the same time it feels like certain things went too smooth or certain characters got disposed off way too easily considering the role they played in the movies. Also what happened to some of the characters that Alice, the main character in the Resident Evil movies, met? That is still unknown to me and I doubt we'll get an answer on that.
Resident Evil movies suck?
Oh yes I've heard this before and I get the idea why, because most of the characters from the game are nowhere to be found in the movies or play a small role next to the main protagonist Alice. So who is Alice? Well she's a woman that has been enhanced thanks to the T-virus, the virus that turns most people into zombies, and fights against Umbrella, the organization that's behind the creation of the T-virus. You'll meet characters like Chris, Jill, Wesker, Claire, Leon and Ada but they always play small roles and you hardly notice them next to Alice who's on screen most of the time and everything seems to resolve around her. This annoys some people who don't like Alice and then the Resident Evil movies can be a tough experience for you. But the moment you accept how things are the movies are actually quite fun to watch, just see the movies less as Resident Evil and more as action movies with some horror elements.
What's going on in the final chapter?
Alice learns that Umbrella has a cure against the T-virus but it's in the Hive, where everything started in the first movie, and she only has a limited amount of time before it's too late to stop Umbrella from purging all the other humans on the Earth and to save everyone. So a race against the clock starts for Alice and she ends up back in Raccoon City where she meets friends and enemies, which is nice to see but at the same time it all feels rushed. No not just because she has to save the world in a short amount of time but also because a lot of the action goes so fast that sometimes I don't even see what's going on. The horror elements are once again hardly there, the main focus is on action and that is once again a disappointment for the horror fans. Even in the Hive things are more based on action while in the first movie the horror elements were much stronger represented. That's a shame but it's pretty much what I expected. In the Hive there is also the classic formula of people getting eliminated one by one because of traps, that is nothing new and it feels like this is added to create some shocking effects but in my opinion they fail with that. That doesn't mean that this is a bad movie, it's just not the best one in the series and the way things end is just not good at all. For example Wesker is one of the main villains in the Resident Evil games and also in previous movies he has played the main villain but now he seems to be some flunky, that is just not right!
Is it worth checking out this movie?
That depends, do you like mindless action and fast paced story telling? Then Resident Evil the Final Chapter is good choice for you. It does help if you've seen the previous movies but you get a recap of the previous movies in the first couple of minutes of the movie so you don't miss out on much. This movie is by far not the best in the series but still fun to watch, but I would suggest you rent it instead of buying it because it might be fun to watch once but this isn't the type of movie I would want to watch multiple times. Once you've seen it then you're probably done with it. The movie does give you some answers about the previous movies and Alice herself so if you've seen the other Resident Evil Movies you probably would want to see this one as well. Even if it's only to know how it ends.
