Women that play games
I keep getting back to female gamers, it's almost as if I would admire them but in truth it's something I find interesting because I don't know a lot of women that actually play games. Oh sure there are some that I know that play these silly games like bejeweled or have their virtual farm with virtual crops but would you call that a gamer? I guess that brings us to a whole other topic, what makes someone a gamer? Man it already gives me a headache to just think about that. So let's stick to one subject here!
You keep talking about female gamers but do they even exist?
Yes they do exist, I know that for some people it's difficult to believe when you've never seen one or even met one but the thing is that you've probably played with or against one and you didn't even realize it. You see not everyone likes to talk online with others and for female gamers things can get a bit nasty in some games because they sometimes get a lot of hate just for being a girl/woman that plays games. As if guys would have the alone right to play games. This makes me think about the time when women weren't allowed to vote, so many men said that it was absurd that women would vote. But women just want equality, they pay taxes just like the rest of us so why wouldn't they have the right to vote? I don't know the exact date but I think somewhere near the end of the first World War (1918) women finally got the right to vote (I don't think this counted for all countries at once, in some countries women probably got that right later). Unfortunately they still weren't seen as equals and even up to this day there are jobs where a man and a woman do the exact same thing and still the woman would earn less money for the exact same job. So does it really surprise you that in the world of games women aren't always respected or treated as equals? You'd think that in the world of games anything would be possible, well I guess even in the world of games there are limits.
Why are some women treated badly in (online) games?
That's a good question and I don't think I know the answer, mostly because as a man it's a bit of a mystery to me why some men have to give women a hard time for just playing a game. Maybe some guys just prefer that the world of games would only belong to guys, perhaps some guys are just afraid of losing to a girl or it's also possible that some guys are just idiots and just fail to behave like normal people and so they have to behave like morons. It's frustrating to see and hear how some guys bully girls/women just for playing a game, I don't think they like that and it just shows how sad you are to bully someone for just doing something they like. To be honest I don't even see the need for that, I mean wouldn't it be nice that next to all the guys that are online that there are also women online? Isn't the world itself more fun with women in it? So why would you want to exclude them from the world of games?
So we (men) need to be nice towards women in games?
I don't think that's really want most women want, I think that most women just want to be accepted and treated as equals. So I doubt that they want to be treated differently, wether that's for good or bad. Of course there's nothing wrong with being nice to someone else, but be nice because you want to be nice and not just because the other person is a woman. Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about, as a guy what do I know about women that play games. Well not as much as I would like to know but I do know that for some women it's not fun to play games with others, especially not online. Because the moment a gamertag enters a match that has the word Miss, Lady or anything else that would indicate that this is a girl or woman playing a game (eventhough there is no guarantee, a guy could just as easily play with that gamertag) then suddenly some people find it funny or in some cases even necessary to be an asshole towards these girls or women. How about we just treat eachother the same, hopefully that means with some respect but I guess that would be asking for too much. I know that sometimes you can get frustrated or irritated by someone else but instead of telling them how you feel about them you could also just take a break and do something else. Yes women play games, but that doesn't mean they're your punching bag if things don't go your way in a game. Let's just pretend for one moment that we're all civilized and normal beings and treat eachother with some kindness. I know it's but a dream but maybe for once in the world of games that dream could be reality. Unfortunately I think we have more luck seeing hell freeze over but then again it's nice to have a dream, even when it probably will never happen...
