My love/hate relationship with the Division

A lot of people are excited about the Division, some call this game amazing and a lot of fun but I wonder how honest they are. Because eventhough the Division can definitely be fun it's not all fun in this game, what's even worse is that there are sometimes serious moments of frustration that are the opposite of fun! This isn't a review but more my personal opinion about the Division.

My experience in PvE as a lone wolf.

I don't like to team up with others, I prefer to go my own way and I'm happy that the Division gives you this option. You can explore the map on your own and do all the missions and other activities on your own. Unfortunately some missions and activities aren't really made for lone wolves, which then leads you to some frustrating moments. For example when you have to carry items to a certain spot that makes you move very slow and you can only equip a pistol when you carry that item, when enemies constantly spawn and there's no way of clearing them before you deal with the objective then you're in for some frustrating moments. This is a good example of where one person carries the items and the other(s) defend that person. It's not impossible to do this on your own but it's a lot more frustrating! Leveling up goes pretty fast if you grind your way through missions, side missions and the activities. It feels sometimes a bit repetitive and when you play on your own that can be annoying, I wouldn't recommend doing that for an entire day because it makes you sick of the game before you realize it. I guess it's to say that the Division is designed to be played with others and if you go against that and decide to play on your own then you deal with more frustration and the game gets boring a lot faster. Does that make it a bad game? No, but I wouldn't call it amazing either!

How does everything work?

You play as an agent of the Division and it's your job to clear out the enemies and make everything safe again, at the same time you hunt down the person responsible for the outbreak of the disease and improve your base to become more powerful in the process. You buy, find or earn new weapons and gear that you can use to become stronger but you also unlock new abilities as you level up. These abilities are in three different skill trees. The medic skill tree allows you to heal yourself and/or others, the tech skill tree allows you to do more damage and gives you extra abilities to do some additional damage and the security skill tree allows you to become tougher and build up better and mobile defenses. You don't  have to stick to one skill tree and you can even swap abilities in the field, so you can adjust to almost every situation. You can also put mods on your weapons to make them more useful, for example putting an ACOG scope on your assault rifle makes it a lot more easier to gun down enemies from a distance and get some nice headshots without having to use a sniper rifle. The map is divided in areas that have a certain level of enemies inside that area, so you know where it's safe for you to hang around and where you should be careful and might get killed easily. My advice to make your way through this game is just clear every area and do all the missions, side missions and other activities until the area is clear (the enemies on the street won't disappear) and you can move on to the next area. In every safe house you can pick up new side missions and activities, it's a good way to earn some extra experience when you're not a high enough level for the next mission.

The Dark Zone.

This is the place where you'll find most people, because on the streets in PvE it's just you, and that means danger could come from everywhere! You see people can shoot you on sight and a lot of them will, wether it's to get an easy kill or just to be an annoying asshole. So don't be surprised if there's a group of people camping at the dark zone entrance gunning down people. If you do make it further in the dark zone then I can advice you to look for items, because these items are often a lot better than the stuff you find in PvE. The only problem is that once you pick up an item other players can see that you're holding something because a yellow canister with a hazard symbol is now on your backpack, so if they didn't shoot you before they will now! If you want to keep what you find you need to go to an extraction point and call in a chopper, this will take more than a minute and other people in the area will be alerted that someone is trying to extract something. So don't be surprised if other people will show up and try to steal your stuff! Once the chopper is there you need to tie it to a rope and then you still need to defend the item for some time before it's finally extracted. It's a lot of work but it can be worth it. The dark zone isn't an area for lone wolves, maybe some people can hold their own against a group but often you're just an easy target. So it's smart to team up before you go into the dark zone. Something else I heard is that you can actually lose items if you're killed in the dark zone, so you might not want to bring stuff with you that you would rather not lose!

Teaming up with others.

The smartest thing you can do is to team up, wether that's for PvE or PvP. It makes the game more fun and also a lot easier. You can team up with other people at safe houses, just sign yourelf up to team up with others and you get put into a team. But it's probably best to play with friends, because not every team you join communicates and that usually doesn't motivate you to stay in that team for long. Teaming up makes missions, activites and especially the dark zone a bit easier. The game was designed to be played with others and it's a lot more fun to play with others than to play solo. But if you're more like me and prefer to play solo then that's not impossible, it just means that things will be a bit harder for you.

Is the Division worth checking out?

That depends, do you like open world games and playing with other people? Then this game will be something you like, but if you prefer to play on your own then you might want to think it over if this game is really something for you. Another thing that bothers me in the Division is how the game isn't very reliable, for example one moment you play the game and the other moment you get kicked out and can't get back in. It's not uncommon for online multiplayer to have issues but that doesn't make it less annoying! The game has big ambitions because the dlc has already been announced and you already get new additions in April and May, also later this year some bigger dlc packs, that should keep you entertained a bit longer. I don't think I'm going to stick with the Division but I think a group of friends might actually have something fun to do with this game and it will keep them busy for quite some time. The Division isn't an amazing game, in my opinion, but it has some fun moments and it's definitely something interesting to check out if you're bored of first person shooters or if you just want to explore and go on your own adventure in a game.
