Getting married in a game means something?

Getting married in real life is a serious commitment, ok maybe not everyone sees it that way but at least I think it is, and it's not something you just decide to do. Perhaps there are exceptions, for example getting married in Vegas seems to be a quick way to get married and also one you might regret, but usually if you want to get married it's something you plan and look forward to (or not). But what about getting married in a game? How different is that from getting married in real life and what does getting married in a game mean to you?

Getting married in a game is just for fun?

That makes sense, especially if your character gets married with a npc. Even if you like the npc and choose to marry the npc in the game it's not real and it's probably just a way to give a happy ending to your character and the npc in the game. But what if you marry a real person in a game? That would change things a bit, oh sure it's still just in a game and it wouldn't mean that you really get married to that person but it does mean that you choose to be with someone else in that game. How much that means is up to you and the person you get married to in the game. It can be for an achievement, for example in Fable 3 there's an achievment for getting married with another player and even getting a kid with another player so it wouldn't surprise me that this would make things a bit easier to get married to other people. But some people just do it for fun, you like someone and you suggest to get married to that person in a game so their characters would be together forever. I guess you can see a romantic side to that as well, something that can lead to more than just friendship.

Getting married with someone in a game can lead to a real relationship with that person?

This might be difficult to believe for some people but it's true, I can speak from experience because I got married in a game with a girl and a year later we were in a real relationship. Yeah that probably sounds weird but it's true. Of course it didn't happen from one moment to the other but maybe at that point where we got married in the game there was already something between me and her, but you don't always see that and it doesn't have to mean anything. But a connection you make with someone in a game can mean more than you think and even lead to something special in real life. But then there were also moments where I married a girl in a game and it didn't mean anything special, we're just friends and she helped me get an achievement.

If you're married to someone in real life, should you also marry him or her in a game?

Well that's up to you, but it would be a bit weird if you got married to someone else than your husband or wife. I mean with a npc it wouldn't be much of a problem, at least I don't think that would be a problem, but if you got married to another person in a game then that would raise some questions. Eventhough I have encountered married women in some games that got into relationships with other men, not that they were actually cheating but they just enjoy the freedom they have in a game and I don't think that's really a problem. In a relationship it's about love, honesty and trust. So if you don't trust your partner in a game then you might want to look at your relationship before you get upset, because a relationship or marriage in a game doesn't have to mean anything. But sometimes it can mean something, I guess it really depends who you ask.
