Overwatch is Team Fortress 3?
I think a lot of fans of Team Fortress 2 have been waiting for Team Fortress 3, but knowing Valve (the developer of Team Fortress 2) that will never happen because Valve doesn't believe in part 3 of any game series they have created. Just look at Left for Dead and Half Life, they get two games (Half Life got some episodes of gameplay but not the official third part in the game series) and then there's silence. Maybe one day we'll see part 3 but for now we have to do with games that look a lot like games we love. Overwatch is a good example of that because it reminds me a lot of Team Fortress 2, but Overwatch looks bigger and better!
How is Overwatch bigger and better than Team Fortress 2?
The obvious reasons would be that Overwatch has more playable characters and maps to play on, but that would be an easy way to explain it. The characters in Overwatch are so unique that hardly any character feels the same as another, even within the same group you can have a completely different experience with one character compared to another character from the same group. For example one attacker, let's say McCree (a Wild West gunslinger), plays in a certain way while another, let's say Tracer (a time altering dual wielding gunner), has a very different play style which makes every character unique more than just looks and powers. Most character have their own unique weapon and powers, which makes playing this game a lot of fun to discover which one works best for you and what type of role you want to play in the team. What I really like about Overwatch is the options you get, not only can you select from four different groups of characters (attackers, defenders, builders and support) you can switch characters at any time (at least in the spawning area) and select something else if your character isn't working out for you. Add some different game types, for example capture points or shoving an objective to a goal before the time runs out, and you've got yourself a fun game that is worth checking out!
So the groups are pretty much the same as Team Fortress 2?
Not exactly, eventhough I can see some resemblance it's not exactly the same. In Team Fortress 2 you don't have a group for builders, eventhough the engineer could definitely count as one, but Overwatch does have that and these characters can make the difference on a map. For example the portal of Symmetra (officially she's one of the support members but I think she's more of a builder), Bastion who can turn himself in a giant turret and Torbjörn with his turrets. You can focus on one group while picking characters in your team, but I think the best teams have at least one character from every group which gives you a more balanced team that is better at countering whatever the other team is throwing at you. With support you can really make the difference for a team when you keep healing them to keep your team standing while defending or attacking an objective. With defenders you can make it very hard for attackers to take an objective or even get past a certain point on the map. Attackers can break a hole in a tight defense or just annoy the crap out of people by making strategic flank attacks. Overwatch gives you a lot of characters and a lot of ways to play, I'm pretty certain you'll find a character you like. Is Overwatch better than Team Fortress 2? It's difficult to say before the game launches but from what I've seen so far the game is looking very promising!
