Games without a story are bad?
These days stories are shoved in almost every game, even when it's a racing game, fighting game or party game. It's as if the game would be worse if there wouldn't be a story in it, but I don't think every game needs a story to be fun to play. I think in some games a story would just be confusing or be standing in the way of making quick progress. Maybe some people value that and want to see more stories in games but in all honesty I think sometimes it's more fun when you have less things to deal with and just play the game!
Stories are necessary?
In some games it is, for example when you're in a (mmo)rpg then it would be less interesting if there is no story and you just grind on a group of enemies to level up until you hit max level. Then there are also games that are more interesting because they have a good story, for example Life is strange and the Wolf among us. I'm not saying that these games would be terrible without a story but it's the story that makes these games so amazing. So maybe a story isn't really necessary, but it can make games a lot better than they already are. It's also more interesting for a gamer to play a game that has a story in it, because that usually gives the game a longer lifespan and makes it more fun to play. Games without a story can also be fun to play but they usually have a shorter lifespan, I mean just look at Evolve and you probably know what I mean. It's a great game but without a real story in the game you kind of get tired of that real fast and if your friends are moving on to other games then what really keeps you in a game without a story?
Games are fine without a story?
Sometimes it's not even the full game but just a game mode that has no story, just look at multiplayer in CoD or Battlefield games. It's just you playing on one team playing against another team and the team that gets the most points at the end wins. There's no story there but a lot of people play this, so I think it's safe to say that you don't always need a story to keep people in a game or to make a game more interesting to play. It's a bit weird though for me to play a game without a story, because I feel a bit lost and sometimes don't really know what to do or how to motivate myself to keep playing. Sure it's fun to shoot other people in an online multiplayer shooter, but that gets old after some time and I don't see myself doing that for months. I guess some people are more into one thing than the other, so maybe some gamers are happy playing games without a story and then there are people who really need a good story to play a game otherwise they're not happy with that game. It doesn't mean that games without a story are bad, it just depends on what you prefer and what you like in a game.
