Some gamers are masochists?

When I play a game I like to have fun, anything that prevents me from having fun is something I don't like and so I find it weird how some people enjoy playing a game that tortures them or really makes them suffer with a lot of deaths and retries. How can you enjoy these type of games? Apparently some people like a challenge or perhaps they are masochists.

Some people prefer a challenge?

I often first check the achievements before I select a difficulty, so if there is an achievement to finish the game on normal then I'll start on normal and if there isn't a specific difficulty achievement (so you just need to finish the game no matter what difficulty you play on) then I prefer to play on easy because that goes faster and it also helps you get other achievements where you need to do certain things and that's usually easier when you play on the easy difficulty. I'm not ashamed of that and I don't feel the urge to challenge myself on harder difficulties if there isn't a specific achievement for it. But there are people that do like a challenge and will play on a high difficulty, not just for the achievement or trophy but also because they enjoy games more if they're more of a challenge. This is something I understand, but why would you play a game like Dark Souls that just wants you to die and die and die and die and die and yes die some more before you can make some progress? I already hated Ninja Gaiden for a ridiculous annoying normal difficulty that felt more like a hard difficulty. Maybe I and other gamers are just spoiled and we just can't handle games anymore that are a bit more challenging.

Gamers these days are spoiled and lazy?

I must admit that I'm not the same type of gamer I used to be, you know in games where you only had a couple of lives and if you ran out of lives you had to start the entire game over. One hit would be fatal and one mistake would most likely make you want to hit yourself with that NES controller, those pointy edges left some marks on me, not that I enjoy pain but frustration can make you do weird things! I welcomed easy games, for example games that give you a lot of checkpoints and make you a bit tougher so you don't die so quickly. But also the fact that you can continue as much as you want really means that there is no longer any pressure or challenge, oh you can't get past a point for a hundred times then you might pull it off in the next hundred attempts. A lot of games hold your hand and protect you against frustration or at least keep it to a minimum. I have to admit that I prefer that, I don't want to play a game and get so frustrated because the game is just too much work and not enough fun. I do realize that this makes me a spoiled and lazy asshole, but I don't play games for a challenge but I play games for fun and for me fun is taking it easy and enjoying a game without going into try hard mode and going through a lot of frustration to get something done. But then again there are people that do like that, these people might seem crazy to some but they're heroes to others. I guess it just depends who you ask.
