Metal Gear Solid V: the Phantom Pain (it's amazing!)

I must admit that after Metal Gear Solid IV I didn't expect that there would be another MGS game, why? Well Metal Gear Solid IV kind of sums up all the loose ends and ties it together into a satisfying (long) ending. But then there's Metal Gear Solid V, the announcement suprised me and yet at the same time it made me super excited about the game. Especially when I heard that you play as Big Boss, the main character from one of my favourite games Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.

Rough start.

You begin in a hospital bed, I won't spoil what happened but if you played Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes then you should know what happened, and things are a bit weird. You see the game in first person perspective and that's quite strange for a MGS game, what's even weirder is that they let you make some choices that didn't make sense at the time to me. I also won't spoil what happens next but I'm extra surprised that this prologue was so big, usually a prologue is about ten minutes to help you get familiar with the game. But after the prologue you finally get started, you set out on your first mission and already you get a taste of that glorious freedom you have in this game.

Freedom!

No that's not a quote from the movie Braveheart, this is what you experience when you're out in the field. Wether you want to do missions, side ops or just free roam. You have so much freedom that you can handle things the way you want to, which means you can go loud or you can go silent with your approach. Of course a loud approach will attract more enemies but it saves you some time and it also fun. But it's rewarding to be silent, that way you can knock enemies unconscious or use your tranquilizer and then fulton (a balloon that let's you take enemy soldiers and/or equipment) them. If you don't want to engage enemies you can also try to sneak past them or try to avoid contact with others and go straight for the objective, this is the most difficult way of playing but definitely rewarding!

Back in the base.

All the resources, people and equipment you gather ends up in mother base (your home) and it helps you create new things or advances equipment you already have. You can walk around the base and test your skills, you can take a shower (the blood and dirt from a mission stays on you until you take a shower) and drive around your base if you expand it further. This expanding is up to you, you decide what you build and where people are assigned to. So if you value research and development over support then you put more people assigned to that team. You can also see how skilled your soldiers are in a certain skill so you can have some fun with managing that or if you're lazy you can just let the game decide that for you. What's also fun is that you can customize the base, so if you want a new colour or symbol for your base then that's up to you.

Unlimited fun?

With all the possibilities and things you can do in this game it seems like there is no end to the fun and I think that this game can keep you busy for quite some time. Just look at all the missions and side ops and you know that you're going to spend at least a week on completing all that and then I'm not even talking about collecting resources or bolstering the ranks in your army with new recruits. If you're not happy how you completed a mission then you can play that mission again and this time with new equipment and/or buddy. Because your buddies will assist you in the field. Wether that's your horse (D-horse), your dog (DD), a sniper (Quiet) or some sort of robot/slash killing machine (a walking death machine) is all up to you. It's your game, it's your way of playing and it's a lot of fun just for you.
