Games are fun?

I've said it so many times but I was actually surprised yesterday when I was playing a game and I suddenly discovered I was having fun. It sounds probably stupid but with all these interesting games coming out and not enough time to play them all it sometimes means you have to rush through a game. That's usually not fun, unless you're the speedrunner (rushing through a game as fast as you can) type that enjoys that way of playing. But if you take a moment and just relax you can really enjoy playing a game, those other games will just have to wait!

Games aren't meant to be rushed?

Well speedrunners might disagree but I think games are meant to be enjoyed, so if you enjoy rushing through it then so be it. But I prefer to take it slow, enjoy what's going on around me and explore the game. That way you can discover so many things and have fun with even the little things in a game. If you rush through a game you'll miss half of the things the developers put in a game and that feels like a waste. Did you pay 60 Dollars/Euros for a game to beat it in one or two days? I don't think so! This is why I appreciate games that keep you busy for at least a week, wether that's with a long story or a lot of side quests or other activities you can do. Of course there are more ways to keep a game interesting, for example with dlc or with multiplayer.

Suddenly you realize you're having fun?

This probably sounds weird so let me explain what happened yesterday. I was playing Destiny the Taken King and I was busy collecting materials I need to upgrade my characters, it felt at first like a grind and that's usually not a lot of fun. I didn't expect to have fun with that but I did it anyway. So on the dreadnaught I was in patrol mode and looking for materials when I discovered new areas, hidden rooms, treasure chests, powerful enemies that spawn and a type of challenge arena where you can fight the lieutenants of Oryx. Together with other players I beat it all and found myself with a lot of cool loot and having so much fun doing that, it was such a surprise that I was having fun that I could hardly believe it at first. Destiny, the game a lot of people seem to hate (if you have to believe youtube comments), a game where I thought it was a lot of hard work to make progress could actually be fun to play and take off the pressure of leveling up and finding better gear. It's amazing how games sometimes surprise you, one moment you're cursing a boss for beating you and the other moment you're smiling while beating hordes of enemies and getting some nice loot as a bonus.
