Destiny the Taken King (first impression)

I played Destiny from day one and stayed loyal for as long as possible, of course I took several breaks (which is only natural because I don't think many people can play the same game for an entire year every day) and there were moments I wasn't happy with the game. But now with the Taken King it seems that Destiny is making a big step forward, let's see how big that step is!

Everything is different?

If you downloaded the 2.0 update then you saved yourself some time with the installation of the Taken King and you already knew some of the new features in the game. The quests and bounties are now in a different menu and you can even track them, what's probably even better is that you can claim a bounty (after you completed it) from that same menu and you don't have to return to the tower. But also a lot of places have changed, well not actual changes as the tower looks different but the roles of characters seem to be a bit different. You now get missions from the vanguard, the crucible and even the factions (if you're supporting one at least) which earn you more rewards and you claim these rewards also from your class mentor (with the vanguard), crucible handler or one of the three faction representatives. You can even earn reputation now with the gunsmith which earn you additional extras if you raise your reptuation level. Your vanguard and crucible marks are turned into commodations you can use to gain more reputation with the vanguard, crucible and the faction you're supporting. Now you have legendary marks that you can earn with strikes, PvP and even in some missions. You can earn a maximum of 200 but if you spend that then you can earn once again up to 200, there is no limit how many times you earn up to 200. Then there is of course the new voice (from Nolan North) for your ghost, which isn't an improvement in my opinion but it's different and different isn't a bad thing!

Is the story good?

One of the things I didn't like in Destiny was the story, it seemed rushed and a bit empty at certain points. In the Taken King you see a bit more dialogue and some more humour added to the story. It's subtle so don't expect a naked Cullen running in the background (if you played Dragon Age Inquisition then you know what I'm talking about). The Taken King is interesting, at first I thought I was done quickly and then a whole new line of missions and strikes opened up and will probably keep me busy for quite some time. What's even better is that you get a new area to explore (the dreadnought, the giant space ship of the Taken King) where you can do missions, strikes and even have free roam (patrol mode). Also your new subclass for your character is tied into the story, eventhough you can leave that alone if you don't want that immeditately (eventhough I can't imagine why you would do that). You also visit Phobos, one of the two moons of Mars, and for the new titan subclass you briefly visit Mercury. Unfortunately Mercury is still a planet you can't visit by your own will, which is a shame.

PvP is better now?

If with better you mean that people won't be able to use their supers that much and that people with some gun skill can actually dominate in a match then you're sadly mistaken. Sure a powerful weapon can make the difference but a super can undo you in one hit and  the new supers from the new subclasses are quite deadly and you can imagine seeing a lot of those in PvP now. The new mode called Rift is a lot of fun though, two teams rush toward the middle where after an amount of time a spark will spawn that players can pick up. Then it's up to the runner (the person that picked up the spark) to rush to the base of other team and score it (as in run into) into that rift. It's fun and fast, but you can imagine that this brings out the camper in a lot of people and I wouldn't be surprised to see people sit still more than run if there isn't a spark or when the other team has the spark. Then there are also modes where your super and other abilities become available faster so you can use them more often, this leads to more chaos and maybe also frustration for some people. But there are also some classic modes where it's just your typical 6 vs 6 and 3 vs 3 matches. So is PvP better? I don't know, things haven't changed that much as in gameplay and as long as people get their super several times in a match it will always frustrate some people and I would suggest to hang around more in PvE.

Should I buy this game?

That depends, do you enjoy playing Destiny? Are you looking for an excuse to come back? Have you heard about the game but never played it and you're curious about it? I'd say those are all good reasons to give the Taken King a chance, it's fun and even for veteran players it's nice to check out all the new things added to the game. Everyone can now reach the max level so there is no more bullshit with being stuck on a lower level and missing out on the best gear. It's one of the main reasons why I bought the game, to develop my character further and discover new things. It's like a character you invested a lot of time in and you want to see where he or she goes now, what new things you discover and the cool loot you can get. As a veteran I got a new shader (the old guard, a black shader), a new sparrow (Raven, also black) and my most priced treasure the Hawkmoon (an exotic hand cannon that was first only Playstation exclusive but now also available for Xbox players). So wether you're a new player or a veteran player, it's worth it to go back or to give this game a chance. There is a lot to do and you only have that much time until the next cool game comes out.
