Why force people to play together?

I really hate it when in a game you're (almost) forced to play with other people, for example if you want a certain reward or want to make progress in the game then you have to do a mission or something similiar and play with other people. It's slowly creeping in the single player experience and you also see more and more multiplayer modes added to single player games, not something everyone is happy with!

What's wrong with playing with other people?

Nothing, but I don't like it when it's required to advance in a game or get the rewards (for example achievements/trophies or cool items in the game). It seems interesting playing with other people but unfortunately it's not always that much fun, especially when you don't want to play with other people. So you might say that you just play a game where you have only single player, but these games are disappearing and the online version of "single" player games often hint towards playing with others or in some way having to deal with other players. Sure the developers say it's optional but in a lot of games it means that you're missing out on things in the game and not get some of the interesting items.

Why do developers want you to play together?

I assume it's meant for people that do like to play with their friends but can't in your standard single player game, so there's an online option where you can visit eachother or a versus mode where you can battle eachother. It seems great but when I play Dragon Age, Mass Effect or Metal Gear Solid I don't want that! But somehow the majority of all the gamers out there must want that because there is an increase of multiplayer and online options in single player games. This makes it almost impossible to find a game where it's just you, where you can get all achievements/trophies all by yourself and where all the rewards are available to you without having to play with other people. Maybe developers mean well, they want people to play together and make new friends. That's nice but not everyone is looking for that, I've noticed that when I play with random players that there is no communication and people just want to get through a mission or that part of the game as fast as possible. I guess multiplayer also keeps a game longer alive, but instead of putting the focus on multiple options you could also add more story missions or other things to do in the single player to keep it interesting for a longer time.
