Looking back at.....Destiny!
As you probably know I usually talk about older games, but with the Taken King expansion launching tomorrow I can't help but look back at the game that was the best for some people and the worst for others. Perhaps we find the truth somewhere in the middle?
Story?
The story in Destiny is bad, it's as simple as that. The cutscenes are sometimes weird and don't always make sense, especially the dialogue is odd at times and it kind of gives me the impression that things were cut out of the game. Apparently there is truth to that because Bungie had to change the story, a lawsuit and all that type of nonsense, and I think the game suffered under that and not just because it was released a year later. But the thing about Destiny is that most people don't play it for the story, it's for the discovery or collecting of new items and some also just like to spend time with friends in a game and play together. Destiny is a good place for that!
Class and role.
What's interesting about Destiny is that eventhough there are three different classes with each class having two (in the Taken King you get a third) subclasses there isn't much different in the use of weapons. You see in some RPGs you can only use certain weapons with a certain class, but in Destiny every class can use every type of weapon (unless it's a weapon tied to a super, for example the golden gun for the hunter). So you don't have to play as a hunter to be able to use a sniper rifle and you don't need to be a titan for the shotgun. But each class does have a certain role, so as a titan you want to be up front and melee a lot. As a hunter you're more on the move, while you make the perfect shot from a distance or dance through the enemy ranks as the bladedancer is totally up to you. As the Warlock you probably hang back the most, your nova bomb is perfect for taking out a big group and with the sunsinger super you can even help your team or yourself if you're down.
The Destiny experience.
That's what you think at first but you can get through the story in a couple of days and then the grind would begin to collect special armor for a higher light level (this doesn't work in the Taken King anymore, everyone can level up to level 40 and light level will now affect your strength and defense). This was lame, because it would mean some reach the max level (usually to raid gear or some other team only experience in the game) and others would be left at a lower level with no chance to level up. What's worse is that the loot system would often screw you, thinking you get something good and it's bad or more of the same. This made a lot of people mad and the disappointment for Destiny was big. But a lot of Destiny players kept going, even after all the negativity there are still those that play and keep building up their character(s). Which is a good thing because with the Taken King coming out you might want to check on your characters and get them ready if you're willing to give Destiny another chance!
