Looking back at.....Metal Gear Solid 2 the Sons of Liberty!
I'm staying in the Metal Gear Solid area with this strange MGS game. Why is it strange? Well things are a bit different in this game, maybe this is a spoiler for some of you but since the game launched in 2001 I'm just going to assume you've played this game. If you haven't played this game and you don't want to read any spoilers then this is the point where you stop reading!
Snake?
So the biggest surprise in this game is that you don't play as Snake, well there's that first part of the game on the ship but that's quite short compared to the rest. Eventhough the other character first uses the name Snake you can hear and already kind of see that he's not Solid Snake. This is confirmed when a few minutes after taking control of the character he takes off his mask. You play as Raiden, a new character in the MGS series, and have to complete your mission. What is your mission? Infiltrate an oil rig and rescue hostages, one of those hostages is the P.O.T.U.S. (president of the United States). Right, no pressure...
Familiar faces.
Don't expect everyone to be strangers in this game, because there are several familiar faces. For example your handler is Colonel Campbell (which you probably know from the previous Metal Gear Solid game), then there's Otacon and a guy named Plisken that looks familiar as well. But somehow your girlfriend, Rose, (in the game) is also on the line and she likes to talk about the past and stuff like that. So it's a bit weird and yet cool, at least if you can live with the fact that you don't play as Solid Snake.
Weird.
I think this must be the weirdest MGS game I played, yes that also includes the Twin Snakes game where things get weird when you meet Psycho Mantis and the paintings start to laugh and he breaks the fourth wall in the game. You see towards the end it feels like Jack (the real name of Raiden) is losing it, at least that's the idea I get because people you thought you knew turn out to be something else. I keep it vague deliberately! This kind of makes you believe that Jack is dreaming, he's insane or he's in some type of simulation. It's not a bad ending of the game, it's just weird and at that time it didn't make much sense. But that's why we get more Metal Gear Solid games so hopefully that clears things up!
Is it good?
It's different, that's the best way for me to describe it. I mean if I say it's good then that means I have to say that the other Metal Gear Solid games are better, but I don't want to say the game is bad because it's not. It's just rough getting familiar with Raiden, he's not Snake and looks a bit femme to me. Not that there's anything wrong with that but it feels like a step back going from the awesome Solid Snake to strange Raiden. But if you can live with the fact that you have to play as Raiden, most of the time, then this game offers you a lot of fun. Some interesting bosses, also one bullshit boss (Fortune), and story information you might want to get familiar with especially if you plan to play Metal Gear Solid 4. MGS 2 isn't the best MGS game but it's definitely fun to play, so check it out if you haven't done that already.
