Killing your allies in a game is ok?
I think we've all done it at one point or the other, killing a friendly or neutral character in a game. For some that's an accident, for example friendly fire or slashing a bit to wildly with your melee attacks, but for others it's just a way to keep the game interesting. Eventhough I do get the idea that some people are just scumbags that like to kill friendly characters in a game, why? Because they can!
Killing a friendly character doesn't make you a bad person?
It would be a bit extreme to say it would make you a bad person, as I mentioned before it's sometimes an accident that you hit a friendly and sometimes characters in a game respond violently against that. For example in the Elder Scrolls Oblivion you can easily hit an ally (for example a guard) in a melee fight and that is often enough to make them mad and go after you as well. You can try an pay off the fine, run away or surrender and hope that this will be enough for them to back off. Unfortunately that's not always the case, sometimes your character is known for being a killer and it kind of leaves a stain on your otherwise noble character or at least your attempt of playing as a noble and good character. So I don't think that you killing a good or neutral character in the game makes you automaticly bad, even if you do it on purpose it's usually just someone blowing off some steam or fooling around in the game. What you do in a game and in the real world are usually two completely different things!
But killing characters in a game sends the wrong message?
If you mean with getting away with it then I see your point. Sure in some games it's ridiculous how easily you get away with murder, just look at the Fable games and how easily it is to wipe out a village and get away with it. But at the same time it's obviously a fantasy game and I doubt people take that very seriously. People were more disturbed when In CoD Modern Warfare 2 you could kill innocent civilians in public with your guns, now that comes a lot closer to real life and it's pretty fucked up. I think developers have a freedom with expressing, but you should always be careful with this. I'm not saying that this brings people on ideas, but I wouldn't call it exactly healthy either. Of course a sane person could see the difference between a game and real life, so what you do in the game isn't real and what you do in real life is. Unfortunately it's not that clear for everyone, for some people the lines are blurred and that's not without danger!
So you shouldn't be able to kill your allies or neutral characters?
Would that really make the world sane and stop all the violence? Of course not! People don't go crazy because of a game and they don't become violent because they play a game. Games are meant for fun, to help you relax or to entertain the player. This doesn't always mean the same for everyone, because some people like a family friendly adventure while others enjoy survival horror games. You can't force one type of game on everyone, that would be lame and ruin the fun for a lot of people! Games allow you to do things you normally would never do, wether that's going to other worlds, flirting with an elf or go on a killing spree. Games are freedom, they let you do things and experience things you might never experience in real life. Is that a bad thing? I don't think so!
