Looking back at.....Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater!
It seems almost impossible but there is a better game out there than Metal Gear Solid (aka the Twin Snakes on the Gamecube), what game is that? MGS 3 Snake Eater! From the opening, James Bond style, to the end it's an adventure you enjoy and that will test your skills. Oh sure it's not very difficult but it's definitely fun and has some interesting boss fights. By the way, if you haven't played MGS 3 Snake Eater then you might want to stop reading here!
You're not Snake?
Well...yes and no. Yes your code name is Snake and you look exactly like Solid Snake, but you're actually someone else. Who are you? Naked Snake, yes that sounds ridiculous but in a way it makes sense. I mean you get dropped in the middle of hostiles and a lot of other bad stuff so yeah it's just you and your skills. Who is Naked Snake? Well I take it you played the game already and if you haven't then you clearly ignored my warning earlier then it's ok to tell you, he's Big Boss (or better said he will be Big Boss at the end of the game). It's your job to stop your trainer, the Boss (honestly I don't make this up) who has betrayed (at least for the moment it looks that way) your country and it's up to Naked Snake to stop her.
Back to basic.
In the previous Metal Gear Solid games you sneak around buildings or in buildings, in Snake Eater you have a bit forest and that means blending in with your camo. You can wear different camo on your clothes but also on your face, you can see how much you blend in with the precentage on screen. It's a neat trick to help you with your stealth, but you can also make it harder for you to pick other camo that doesn't help you blend in and actually makes you stick out even more. But it still comes down to sneaking, so get close and take them out without alerting other guards. If that does happen then you'll have to deal with the back up forces and that can lead to some nasty situations but you can survive that and if you manage to hide well enough then it's almost as if nothing happened.
Boss, Big Boss and Bosses!
With all those bosses around you might feel your head spin but it's actually one of the best things about Snake Eater, the bosses are interesting and also challenging. I'm not saying they're all amazing but some are quite memorable. For example a young Revolver Ocelot, The Fear, The Fury and of course The End a sniper that you can beat by just waiting (you'll have to wait quite some time though). Of course there are more bosses but these are some of my favourites.
Conclusion.
MGS 3 Snake Eater is a blast from the past, it's a spy game that actually feels like you're playing inside a spy movie. The sometimes long cutscenes do help give you that feeling but those cutscenes are hardly ever boring, it's an interesting story with interesting characters that are quite memorable. Sneaking in the jungle, some of the boss fights, the moments with Eva (your love interest in this game), survival skills (eating animals for example) and the story are all part of this amazing game that leaves a nice impression on you and that makes you hungry for Metal Gear Solid V the Phantom Pain.
