Looking back at.....Jade Empire!

When I first heard of the game Jade Empire I was very curious about it and really wanted to play it. Why? Because it came from the same developer (BioWare) as Knights of the Old Republic and I love that game! So of course I was interested in Jade Empire, but this game was a bit different then I first expected...

Story.

Well I won't spoil it for those that haven't played Jade Empire but it's a bit less interesting then what I expected and it's short. Do you believe that I beat this game in two days? Well it doesn't matter if you believe it or not, but I was disappointed that I beat the game so fast and it really made me sour. I felt like I wasted money on this game, at least for having payed the full price. You also get companions but these are nothing what you would expect if you played Mass Effect or Knights of the Old Republic, these people just fill in the companion slot if you want to take someone with you in a mission and don't really have something interesting to add to the story. At least that's how I see it. I don't mind if games aren't 80+ hours of gameplay but beating a game in one or two days is just bad. You either need some fantastic gameplay that makes you want to beat the game multiple times, it also helps with different endings or memorable moments in the game itself. But I didn't get that from Jade Empire, sure it's a fun game to play but more like a game you play between other games.

Test for might.

No I'm not talking about Mortal Kombat, that's the impression I got from this game. At first you can select your character that has an offensive, defensive or balanced fighting style. This is combined by a different look for your character, each fighting style gives you another character. This is actually pretty cool, but compare that to the customization in Mass Effect (which came out a couple of years later) and it's not so special. You start as a student but once on your quest you become stronger and more powerful. That's actually interesting but once again the short story makes it less memorable for me and actually quite forgettable.

Worth checking out?

If you never played it then it's definitely worth checking out, especially since it's now for sale for a price that's worth it. So even if you finish the game in one or two days you probably don't feel like you wasted money and perhaps it has more replay value for you. You can always try different fighting styles and see what works best for you. Maybe your companions respond different on you or it's just something you want to do to pass the time. I probably sound a bit negative about the game but that's just bad memories of how I felt when I beat the game so quickly and had no motivation to go for a second playthrough. It's not a bad game, it's just not what I expected and hoped for.
