Will there ever be a playable female main character in a GTA game?
I think we´ve seen all types of characters in GTA games, usually not the type you´d take too seriously and that are funny even when they don´t try to be funny. But somehow Rockstar has never had a female main character in GTA. Sure with multiplayer there are customization options and yes you could play as a woman, but that´s not the same. Where is the charming femme fatale, the tough chick from the streets or the crazy girl that likes to empty her gun into people?
Women aren´t interesting main characters for a game?
Excuse me? Have you played Tomb Raider? For the Playstation players there is Beyond Two Souls and let´s not forget about the now exclusive to Nintendo Bayonetta. I doubt a lot of guys really care if they play as a man or as a woman, I´d say some guys even prefer to play as a woman anyway. So what excuse does Rockstar have not to make a GTA game with a playable female main character? I know that there are whiners out there complaining about violence towards women in games, to be honest GTA games don´t support violence towards women but it is possible to do that in a GTA game. But the same can be said about other open world games, for example Fall Out 3 or any Saints Row game. How about Skyrim? You can brutally murder an entire town and yet you hear no one complain about that! Perhaps a playable female main character in a GTA game will shut them up, I doubt that it will though...
Saints Row can do it, so why can´t GTA?
Eventhough Saints Row started a lot like a GTA clone it became something else, so I doubt that whatever Saints Row does now has very little to do with GTA. But Saints Row did introduce a playable female main character since Saints Row 2, so why isn´t there a playable female main character in GTA? I wish I knew, perhaps it doesn´t fit in the story or maybe Rockstar isn´t comfortable with the idea. But when I look at having three different main characters in one game (GTA V) then it´s not completely impossible that at least one of them would be a woman. So maybe that´s something that could be added in dlc or perhaps the next GTA game, but that would probably take quite some time.
What kind of woman would the playable female main character be?
I think we should leave that to the experts, I mean Rockstar manages to make interesting characters and I´m certain they can come up with something good for a playable female main character. But to make some suggestions I´d be interested in seeing a female cop on the edge (she´s accused of making deals with criminals), a journalist that gets herself in trouble (wrong place, wrong time) or a grifter (something like Sophie Devereaux from Leverage) trying to make something of herself in a new town with new possibilities. It would be something different and I would definitely welcome that in a GTA game! Rockstar, please make it happen!
