Looking back at.....DC Universe Online!
I don´t play a lot of PC games but when I heard that there would be a super hero game with DC super heroes in it I just couldn´t resist buying it. I´m actually surprised there wasn´t that much hype around it, but the cinematic trailer on youtube did look pretty and I bet that made a lot of people curious about that game. But the problem with these type of trailers is that they don´t show you the gameplay, which is usually one of the most important parts about a game!
Who are you in this game and what do you do?
You play as a hero you created yourself, which means you can pick your own powers and also customize the look of your character. That means you can play as a man or a woman, you can be black or white (or anything in between), you can play as a hero or villain and you can create your own costume. Unfortunately this costume is usually quite simple in the beginning because you´ll have to unlock a lot interesting costume parts before you can wear them. You´re a new hero or villain and that means you´ll get a mentor and you can pick one yourself, this mentor is a well known name in the DC universe and depending on what you are this is a hero or villain. The main objective is fighting against Brainiac, because he has declared war against everyone on Earth so heroes and villains have for once a common enemy. This doesn´t mean that they don´t turn on eachother, in a lot of missions you´ll encounter villains (if you play as a hero) or heroes (if you play as a villain) that will try to stop you. Your adventures start in places like Metropolis and Gotham City where you´ll encounter a lot of familiar faces.
Do you also team up with other heroes?
Yes you can play with other players and form a team, but you can also play solo if you prefer that, but you might be more curious if you can team up with Batman or Superman. Well you´ll meet them in some missions and yes sometimes they do assist you but it still comes down to you doing most of the work. This isn´t always a bad thing though, sometimes it´s actually fun to be the one that saves them. For example I love the mission where I helped the Titans (the adult versions of the Teen Titans), to rescue them one by one and then fighting together. It was almost as if you´re one of them. Of course there are more moments like that in the game but I don´t want to spoil that for you! The main focus does lie on you working with other players to take down stronger enemies in more difficult missions. But you can get a lot done by yourself and it´s a good idea to first unlock some skills before you rush into the big fights!
What makes a game like this fun to play?
The endless possibilities, you can be almost anyone and do almost anything. You can combine super powers with a weapon you´re using and create something unique, add a cool costume to that and you have your own unique hero or villain in this game. But also when you start you can pick a mentor and thus where you start, if you don´t like Metropolis you go to Gotham City and do missions there. You don´t have to do everything, but there is a lot to do and whatever helps you level up is something you might not want to miss out on. You can also just play hero in the streets and stop crime in random events. Whatever type of hero or villain you are there is a lot to do!
