Old Resident Evil games vs new Resident Evil games

I often hear a lot of people talk about the old Resident Evil games as if those are the best games ever, I would normally agree but to be honest it´s not all great. Which does raise a question, are old Resident Evil games better than new Resident Evil games?

Good and bad things about old Resident Evil games.

When you play Resident Evil or RE 2 and 3 then things aren´t easy. You can only carry that many items at once and the fixed camera settings add a creepy point of view to the game. But at the same time this is also annoying, because it sucks if you have to go back to an item because you couldn´t carry that earlier and bump into walls all the time because the controls are a bit weird in fixed camera angles. But it´s interesting how it was more creepy when things went slower and there was no such thing as an autosave or almost infinite amount of bullets scattered across the game. At the same time you do have the safety of the item screen to reload, equip another weapon or heal yourself. But wether you´re in the mansion or walking in the streets of Racoon City you know that danger can appear at any time!

Good and bad things about new Resident Evil games.

When you look at Resident Evil 4, 5 and 6 then it´s not difficult to spot the biggest difference. The camera is finally where it belongs, behind you! This makes shooting easier, at least I certainly hope so, and eventhough it takes away the creepy camera angles you don´t know what happens behind you so it´s a bit more realistic. There is no more saftey in the item screen and you can be attacked when you want to heal or equip another weapon. This is also a bit more realistic but causes also a lot of frustration sometimes. Something that people seem to hate is how fast the game is and how the ´zombies´ are no longer slow and dumb. This adds a new challenge and eventhough I welcome a challenge it´s annoying that it sometimes feels more like a shooter than a survival horror game. At first a lot of people were ok with the changes (Resident Evil 4), then some started to dislike them (Resident Evil 5) and eventually began to hate them (Resident Evil 6).

Conclusion.

It´s difficult to please gamers, because one person likes this and the other likes that. So you can never make everyone happy. But instead of putting the focus on what we don´t like it might be a good idea to look at what we do like. For example the camera position in the new Resident Evil games is better than the fixed camera in the old Resident Evil games, because this allows you to aim and not just hope for the best when you squeeze both triggers. I´m also ok with the item menu being in real time, which means that enemies can still attack you. I do prefer having autosave in the game, because no matter how much fun a game is it´s never fun to do the same shit several times because you died in the game. Once again make it a slow paced game where it´s not all action and explosions but solving puzzles, deadly traps and zombies that aren´t dangerous because there are twenty but because you´re low on ammo. This makes games a bit more scary and that´s how it should be in a survival game! Of course we don´t all have the same taste in games and it wouldn´t surprise me that there are people with different opinions, but survival horror games should really stop trying to be action/adventure games or first person shooters. Take the best from all the previous Resident Evil games and make an unforgettable Resident Evil 7, you can do it Capcom!
