Being first, does it really matter?

I´m not just talking about youtube comments, nobody really cares about that but I´m talking about being the first person that beats a game or beat a certain level or challenge. Somehow there are people that take this serious and spend hours and maybe even days on it to be the first person to beat it. But why? It´s not like people will remember you as being the first guy to beat that game. Even when it´s about more important things like the first man to cross the ocean in a plane or the first man in space then people still don´t always know who that is. So what gives these people the idea that it´s so important to be the first person to beat a game?

Maybe it´s just important to him or her?

Oh so it´s self-glorification? Perhaps it´s not that extreme but this personal victory seems silly to a lot of other people, that you race through a game or challenge just to be the first to beat it and only a handful of people would know about it and probably even less that actually care about it. Let´s take the game that, apparently, everyone hates but still plays and yes that´s Destiny! In Destiny there is a thing called the raid, a lot of people are excited about this and even more try to beat it as quickly as possible. This goes so far that when the hard version of the raid (Crota´s End) came out so many people wanted to be the first to beat it. This went so far that even on youtube and twitch you could follow people live that showed their progress with their team in their stream. But what really annoyed me is that Bungie would give a reward to people that finished it first, so this weird behaviour isn´t just accepted it´s even motivated by the developers!

Good for them, right?

I guess it´s good news for the winners, but what about people who can´t even play the raid because Bungie can´t be bothered to make a matchmaking system for the raid? Instead of putting the focus on those that do have people to play the raid with whenever they want they could focus on people that haven´t played the raid because they don´t know anyone to play it with and don´t have much luck with forming a team. But it doesn´t surprise me that much and I doubt things will change any time soon.

So being first does matter?

Apparently to some people it does, eventhough the rest of the world couldn´t care less about that and nobody will remember you for your ´heroic´ accomplishment. Which is sad to be honest, some people work so hard to be the first with something and then get nothing. Oh sure you´ll know that you´re the first but then what? Getting back to Destiny, do you remember who the first team that beat the raid? The first person to beat the game? The first person that reached level 30? You´ll probably have to look that up and even then it´s not always that clear, because multiple people will claim to be first and that can go so far that they throw hateful shit towards eachother just because they think they´re right. Perhaps being first matters to some, but I´d say anyone with at least half a brain couldn´t care less!
