Are achievements/trophies really necessary?
I know that achievements/trophies aren´t for everyone, some people really don´t give a flying fuck about them but that doesn´t mean that they don´t get them. So what is the point of getting achievements/trophies and do we really need them in games?
As much as some people might hate them other people actually like getting achievements/trophies. For some it´s a hobby to get as many as possible and then there are some that just want to get rare achievements/trophies or complete as many games as possible (getting all achievements/trophies in a game). This alone will probably keep achievements/trophies in games because they´re fun to collect and especially now that you can use the achievement picture as your background on the Xbox One.
But does an achievement or trophy have a real function?
Not really, because it´s not something you need to keep on playing or be considered as great by other players. But achievements/trophies can give you bragging rights (for as much as that´s important to you) and it can also be a good motivation to keep playing a game or try to play it on a higher difficulty. Achievements/trophies hold as much power over you as you let them, so if you want to complete a game or get a specific achievement/trophy then that can keep you busy for some time. While people that have no interest in achievements/trophies can just put the game away and do something else when they´re done with it.
Does that make achievements/trophies dangerous?
Not exactly, I mean as long as you don´t go crazy (as in stay up day and night to get a certain achievement/trophy) then you should be ok. Like I said achievements/trophies hold as much power over you as you let them, so if you´re pushing yourself to get a certain achievement/trophy then that can be frustrating and painful when you fail. But at the same time it´s glorious when you finally get it, so there are definitely good sides and bad sides when it comes to achievements/trophies. Just take it easy and don´t forget to enjoy playing the game, then the achievements/trophies are just a nice bonus!
