Looking back at.....SSX 3!

With Winter being this close and several parts of the world already having a white blanket on the landscape it seems like a good idea to talk about SSX. Why SSX 3? Because this game concentrated more on single player than multiplayer, something that made the previous SSX games so much fun (especially SSX Tricky). Does that make SSX 3 a bad game? No, but it takes some getting used to!

What´s so different about SSX 3? Because SSX 3 took things to a new level, instead of just snowboarding on courses you actually have a mountain to conquer! This means more freedom and less confined bullshit. Which is perfect for everyone that loves snowboarding, but it kind of sucks that this was at the expense of the super fun multiplayer. I couldn´t sit with a friend on the couch and play SSX, something that often lead to some hilarious moments. But getting back to the freedom, it´s amazing how you can just move around on the mountain and select what you want to do. It´s simple but it works very well!

Something else I don´t like about SSX 3 is that you lost several characters, especially from SSX Tricky, and got some new or ´old´ characters in return. Which is nice I guess but I did miss some of the funny characters from SSX Tricky. Some are available as a skin for your rider but that´s just not the same. SSX Tricky has personality, but SSX 3 seems more like watching a commentator do his or her thing on a snowboard. But this didn´t make the game bad, no it´s just a minor disappointment.

The music is fantastic, while snowboarding on the mountain you could listen to a radio station and hear some cool tunes. They kept this in later SSX games because it´s good and who doesn´t want to listen to some sweet tunes while doing some sick tricks on your board? The tricks are once more insane and every rider has a special trick, something that is just beyond ridiculous. The controls are still pretty smooth, unlike some snowboarding games SSX 3 goes pretty easy on you. It doesn´t take a master to land some sick tricks and if you´re looking for a challenge then there are several records you can try to break when it comes to speed or style.

SSX 3 isn´t my favourite snowboarding game but it´s definitely a lot of fun! A game that doesn´t take itself too serious and still gives you enough challenges to keep yourself busy for quite some time. It´s a shame that there aren´t that many games like that anymore, because when Winter is coming you want to do something else than shoot eachother in the 100th first person shooter!
