Looking back at.....Dragon Age: Origins (and awakening)!

For everyone that isn´t certain about Dragon Age: Inquisition I´ll take you back to where it started (with the Dragon Age games). When I first saw Dragon Age: Origins I was interested, everything looked pretty good and I like these type of RPGs. The only part I didn´t like was that your main character doesn´t speak, instead you select text and the others will respond to that. It´s not terrible but compared to other games that´s just a shame.

What do you do in Dragon Age: Origins? You have to stop the darkspawn and that means eventually dealing with the archdemon (looks like a big dragon), I put that in simple words because to describe all that is Dragon Age: Origins would be injustice on just this page. It comes down to you and another Grey Warden to stop the enemy. What is a Grey Warden? A Grey Warden is someone that is specialized in killing darkspawn and it also means you´re the only one that can kill the archdemon. I won´t go into too much details because then I enter the world of spoilers! On your journey you meet other characters that sometimes want to join your group, these companions are interesting characters that offer you hours of conversations and also some funny moments in the game. What´s interesting that these conversation also happen on your travels, so when you move around on the road then your companions will start talking with eachother. You can also become good friends or even get into a relationship with some of the companions. What´s interesting is that Bioware also made it possible for two women or two men to get together. Something that´s not accepted everywhere but that didn´t stop Bioware to put that in more of their games, for example in Mass Effect 3 and Dragon Age 2.

But why is it called Origins? Because at the start you play an origin story, this depends on the character you´ve chosen. You can play as a human noble, dwarven noble, dwarven commoner, a mage (either human or elf), Dalish elf and city elf. Each origin story fits perfectly into the main story and you might even encounter people from your origin story later in the game. As unique as each story is, it will still come down to you joining the Grey Wardens and going to a battlefield to the South. But you can decide how you respond to certain things and also if you want to be helpful or a jerk. This type of freedom is interesting because the characters in the world will respond to that behaviour. Of course you can also go for the hilarious answers and don´t take things too seriously. It´s your story and you decide what you´re going to do, who will join your group and with whom you want to be allies.

So where does Dragon Age: Awakening fit in? This expansion takes place after Dragon Age: Origins, which means you need a saved game of you completing that game or else you can´t play the expansion! You can also decide if you want to continue with your main character from Dragon Age: Origins or make a new character. This story is a bit more rushed and also a bit more disturbing, still it will probably keep you busy for twenty hours. What´s interesting about this DLC is that you´ll meet characters that will play a pretty big role in Dragon Age 2, so in a way it´s all connected. But that doesn´t mean you have to play Dragon Age: Awakening to get into Dragon Age 2.

What I like about Dragon Age games is the story, the characters and of course the world you play in. It´s big, beautiful and full of surprises. I think anyone with a love for fantasy games will probably like this, but these are dark fantasy games so if that´s your thing then Dragon Age games might be something for you! It´s a world where you can lose yourself for hours, days and even weeks if you´re not careful! It´s so much fun to play Dragon Age games and eventhough I know the story and the characters, I still play it every now and then just to get back into some good old memories.
