When a patch doesn´t fix a game

There was a time and a place that I considered a patch as a good thing, a game wasn´t working correctly and this patch would fix everything. Unfortunately I found out soon enough that this isn´t always true, what´s even worse that sometimes it ruins the game even more. But let´s not forget about the patch that fixes one thing but fucks up something else. Which kind of makes me wonder, do you want a patch for your game?


On Monday I got a patch for Dragon Age: Inquisition, eventhough I experienced some minor issues in the game I wasn´t very happy with the patch. Because the game was working ok, my pessimist nature immediately made me think of all the things that could go wrong now. Unfortunately I was right, after the patch I was stuck in an endless loading screen (something that hasn´t happened before to me in all the weeks I´ve been playing it). You can imagine that I wasn´t happy with that, sure you just restart your console and continue but that doesn´t take away the frustration and of course the question why this is a thing now. I mean a patch is meant to fix things, not to fuck up other things!


But it´s nothing new, my worst experience with patches was in Max Payne 3 multiplayer. Whenever one thing was fixed another thing went bad, up to the point that you sometimes would get a glitch or bug back into the game that had already been fixed months before. Then there were also problems that were never truly fixed. You can imagine that this made a lot of people angry, because how can you claim that you fixed something when it´s clearly not fixed and how does a patch get through all tests when it´s clearly a patch with bugs and glitches in it that fucks up the game even more?


So you shouldn´t accept updates for your game? Unfortunately that will often mean that you can´t play your game or that you can only play it offline, so I doubt that´s a real solution. I guess the only thing you can do is hope for the best, eventhough there is always a chance that things get worse instead of better. It would be nice if games would be bug and glitch free from the start and that it stays that way, but that´s not reality and I don´t think that is even a possibility at this time. Maybe in the future but right now things are just troubled, unfortunately...

Button bashing

It seems that more and more games want you to smash on the buttons of the controller, which seems like fun but knowing that this weak piece of plastic can´t handle much it´s not the smartest way to handle your controller. In the good old arcade days I could smash on buttons, ok nothing too crazy but at least those machines had a lot more resilience than these weak controllers we have now. You have to pay a small fortune for one of them and they fall apart with the slightest bit of force you use. After smashing a couple of controllers out of frustration I learned to be careful with them, but when games force you to be an agressive button basher it doesn´t really help. Button bashing is nothing new but I do seem to see it in more and more games, even games that could easily do without this abusive way of treating your controller. Sinful Sunday: Why are you so serious?

When I play a game I don't want to be serious, I just want to have fun and relax. Honestly real life is serious enough and I don't need that in games. Who cares who wins or who loses, just have fun and that already makes it great! Unfortunately there are gamers that take certain games way too serious, so serious that they literally forget to have fun which is quite frustrating to deal with. These kind of players are so serious that they probably left the fun behind when they started the game. Sigh... Serious gamers are lame gamers? Mortal Kombat X isn´t just another fighting game?

You´ve probably seen the announce trailer of Mortal Kombat X, then you probably also know that it shows two familiar characters fighting against eachother. At that point you´re probably still thinking that it´s just more of the same but with a better coat of paint, I understand that pessimist look and it´s not often wrong. But from what I´ve heard about Mortal Kombat X is that it´s going to be more than just a new game in the Mortal Kombat game series. What´s new? Apparently there will be more fighting styles for one character, giving everyone his or her own favourite style to use against opponents. There was something familiar in another Mortal Kombat game where they also had weapons in a fighting style, but this seems to go a bit deeper and more unique. Of course these are just words at this point, nothing has been proven just yet!
