Sinful Sunday: Getting everything you want

As a kid I had to learn that you can´t always get what you want, just like the Rolling Stones song, and that sometimes there are things in life that you just don´t get. It´s a harsh lesson but one you´ll (often) learn sooner or later. Does that make you a better person? Oh I wouldn´t say that, but I do think it´s important that you learn that you can´t always get what you want. No matter how much you want something, sometimes it´s better (for yourself) to not get what you want.

How does that work? If you always get exactly what you want then you´ve probably never dealt with disappointment or loss, something which you can´t avoid in your life forever. I´m not saying you must learn this when you´re little but the sooner you learn it the better it is. There is nothing wrong with spoiling someone you care about, but I wouldn´t be extreme with that because that leads to bad things. Parents sometimes want to be the best parents in the whole world for their kids, but giving them everything they want isn´t really the way to be a good parent. Not that I´m the expert but let´s be honest and think about it.

If you would give your child everything he or she wants then what kind of person are you creating? It´s true that some people can handle this better than others, not every child that is spoiled turns into an insufferable twat. But it´s often not healthy to always get what you want. Which doesn´t mean you have to be an asshole to your child, but always giving them exactly what they want (for example games, clothes, dolls, etc.) isn´t always the smartest way of dealing with that. Besides instead of saying just no you can also say why they can´t have that, this of course works better if the kid is a bit older but it helps if you keep it short and to the point.

There is nothing wrong with giving a present to someone you care about, I´d say that even a good thing. Especially now in this time with presents and celebrations it´s nice to share things with others, presents are a part of that as well. But it´s the thought that is important and not the size/price of a present or the amount of presents! Kids might disagree with that...
