It´s more fun to play games on your own?
To some people this seems impossible, how can you have more fun on your own than with friends? Well that depends on what type of gamer you are, because not everyone likes to jump into a multiplayer arena and get shot to pieces every ten seconds. But what makes single player games so interesting?
I´m speaking here from personal experience but single player games are fun because it´s you against the (game) world, you have to save (or destroy, depending on what type of game you´re playing) everyone and hopefully beat the game. That doesn´t just give you bragging rights, think about finishing Halo games on legendary difficulty on your own, but also a feeling of accomplishment. But that´s not all that there is to single player games. Some single player games are have huge worlds where you can lose yourself for hours, days, weeks and sometimes even months!
When I play a game like Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age: Inquisition or Knights of the Old Republic then there isn´t one moment that I´m thinking that it could be fun if someone else could join my game or if I had to face other players in some type of multiplayer arena. These games are made for people that want to play on their own and make a journey through an interesting story and try to experience it all in that game world. Maybe some people rush through these games but there are those that go through every conversation, try to complete every quest and do all the right (or wrong) things for that special ending.
When a game offers you choices then it also gives you a chance to have different endings, for example being nice leads to a good ending and being bad leads to a different type of ending. Sure not every game has that, but a lot of games with choices usually have the good and bad ending (eventhough bad is more an evil ending). This makes it worth it to play the game multiple times, hopefully that leads to some unique experiences. Especially if you can play as different characters and/or classes. Even gender or race can play a role in how the creatures in that game world will respond to you.
This doesn´t mean that multiplayer is lame, but it sucks when developers shove a multiplayer mode in a game that´s clearly a single player game. For example Mass Effect 3 and Dragon Age: Inquisition have a multiplayer mode that might be fun for some people but I think most people just want to play the story on their own. Does that make single player games more fun? I guess that depends on you, what type of gamer you are and if you have friends that enjoy playing the same games as you. There are a lot of things that can influence your choice in games, but deep down inside you know what you prefer and there is nothing wrong with liking single player or multiplayer games. And you know what? It´s also quite alright to like them both, because single player and multiplayer games are both a lot of fun in their own way!
