Looking back at.....Dragon Age 2!
I know this isn´t an old game, but since it fits so nicely on Dragon Age: Inquisition (the game I seem to be playing all the time now) I wanted to take a closer look at it. After Dragon Age: Origins a lot of people were super excited about Dragon Age 2 and I was one of them. But then once Dragon Age 2 launched people complained and started hating the game. Was this just or are people just whining assholes?
Well it wasn´t the story, because the story is pretty good. You play the game that one of the characters in the game tells, it´s the story he tells so there are times that you´re just playing bullshit (Hawke, the main character, beating up darkspawn without breaking a sweat and Varric teaching his brother a lesson) and other times it´s actually the truth no matter how difficult it is to believe that. What´s also interesting is that you don´t just play a story, you play a part in someone life. Because the game takes place in and around Kirkwall where the main character (Hawke) stays for several years. In that time he becomes an important person in the city and with that also a lot of bad things happen. I´m not saying the story is fantastic but it´s definitely entertaining and worth checking out!
So why did people hate Dragon Age 2? I guess it was a bit rough to go back to only being able to play as a human when you first had the option to choose between three races, then there are the repeating areas where you constantly hang around the same places and just face new enemies. Also a lot of areas look the same, for example in caves or buildings you often walk around in almost the exact same area. There are also people that hate the combat system, it´s too fast and they also hate the button bashing attacks (rapidly pressing a button to attack). I actually like that combat system and I´m glad they kept that for the most part in Dragon Age: Inquisition.
Dragon Age 2 isn´t a bad game and I´ll tell you why. Something that´s important to me are the characters and Dragon Age 2 has a lot of interesting characters, some play a big role and others a small role. Varric (the story teller and also one of your companions in the game) is probably the funniest and most interesting character, but there are several other characters like Fenris and Merill that are also worth getting to know. You also have your own family members: brother, sister, mother and uncle that will often give you a headache (just like in a real family). You also see the Qunari in their true form, because Sten (Qunari warrior) in Dragon Age: Origins was probably not the final idea of how a Qunari should look, and they look amazing! You also see the actions you made earlier in the game take effect, because when you´re several years further as Hawke in the game you notice that your choices definitely have an effect on the people around you.
I must admit that Dragon Age 2 is probably my least favourite of the three Dragon Age games but that doesn´t mean that it´s a bad game, it´s actually a fun game to play and a must for the Dragon Age fan! Sometimes you have to give a game a chance, it might not bedazzle you from the start but certain games take a moment to sink in and then you´ll learn to appreciate them for what they are and that´s a lot of fun!
