Voice actors can make or break a game?

It seems silly but in truth a voice actor can elevate a game beyond the normal rating it would´ve gotten and at the same time he or she can also make a game with excellent gameplay look like an awful experience if the performance is bad. So it´s a good idea to spend some money on your voice actor(s) because nobody wants to listen to people that have no idea what to say or do.

A Hollywood star doesn´t guarantee succes? It´s interesting when a (big) Hollywood star is in a game, he or she does a voice in the game (usually one of the important characters, but it could be the good guy or the bad guy) and that will attract a lot of attention from both gamers and people that have no interest in gaming. Either way it gives the game attention and that´s hardly ever a bad thing if you want your game to sell, unless the performance is awful and makes you regret ever listening to whatever he or she said! It doesn´t happen all the time but sometimes it seems like voice actors are just having a bad day or they´re just not happy with what they´re doing. This is something you can hear in their performance and that makes it just awful to listen to as a gamer.

Voice acting isn´t for everyone? No it´s not, you might think that it´s easy but it´s not just about making silly voices or just to go crazy. It´s still acting and as you probably know that´s not for everyone. For some it´s even more difficult because you have to do everything with your voice while in a movie you could act with your entire body and make things a bit more clear. For example if you´re angry then it´s not always easy to show that with just voice acting, oh sure you can shout but what if you´re angry but you want to trick the others you´re not or how about sarcasm? It´s not always that simple to make that clear with just speaking, especially if you go into details in games with a lot of dialogue.

It´s a shame though that certain voice actors appear in a lot of games, I think Troy Baker is a good example of that, and eventhough he does an excellent job it all starts to sound the same. I mean if he plays the Joker in one game then how can you take him seriously when he plays Batman in the next game? Still it´s impressive that someone can handle that many roles. It would be nice if there is a bit more diversity, give some chances to new names and who knows what they can do? But I don´t blame developers, you´ll probably want to go for a safe bet and if you´re happy with the performance of a well known voice actor then why would you pick someone else?
