Sinful Sunday: Pretend to be someone/something you´re not
It´s easy to lie, especially online when there isn´t really a way of finding out if someone is telling the truth. Maybe lying isn´t easy for everyone but online things become a lot easier, because you´re safe behind your screen and you avoid direct contact which can be intimidating for some people. Sometimes people lie about simple things, about something they like or where they live. But then there are bigger lies where you pretend to like someone or even pretend to be someone you´re not, this can be quite hurtful and deceiving.
Why do people lie? I think the whole online thing makes it easier to lie, who could figure out that you´re lying? So that makes it easier to lie and thus more frequent, because if you feel like you can get away with it then why would you stop? But sometimes people are also unhappy with whom they are or what they have, so they make up things to make their life more interesting. This seems harmless but sometimes this can lead to a lot of trouble, for example pretending to be someone you´re not and then someone falls in love with this person you pretend to be can be quite hurtful for that other person.
So it´s always wrong to lie? That´s how I was raised and I think a lot of people also know that it´s wrong, but I can see why some people would do it. But instead of lying you could also just say that you´d rather not talk about certain things. For example if you´re unhappy with who you are then you can just say that you prefer not to talk about yourself, of course this makes it more difficult to become friends with someone if you don´t want to talk about yourself. But maybe instead of thinking about what you don´t like about yourself you could look at the things you do like, maybe there are things you have in common with someone else?
How can you see through the lies? Sooner or later someone will make a mistake, it can be a small one but people that pay attention will often notice that. Maybe some people won´t notice or won´t ask about something suspecious but there is a good chance that this will raise questions and then it seems that only the truth could save the friendship. I´m not saying that this is a guarantee, but sometimes it´s better to just do the right thing. Especially if you consider the other person to be your friend or maybe even more, then it´s not right to lie and I do think that he or she deserves to hear the truth. So don´t pretend to be someone or something you´re not, because sooner or later people will find out and then they might not be interested in being your friend anymore.
