Sinful Sunday: Leeching

Do you know what a leech is? You probably know that, but in the world of games a leech is someone that does as little as possible and still take credit for a victory or succes. Often leeches can be found in situations where they earn a lot of experience or for getting an achievement or trophy. It´s not a suprise that most other players don´t like leeches, but there isn´t a lot you can do to that in a public match...

It´s quite frustrating when someone that leeches stays in a match and you can´t do anything against that, but of course you can report that person and then hopefully that person will be kicked out or at least dealt with. It´s even better when the game has a way of dealing with that, where people can vote to kick someone out of the match (of course this should be used as a way of dealing with annoying people and not to bully!) or the game will kick players that are inactive for a certain amount of time. I think more games should have options for that, especially when the game kicks people out when they´re inactive for a certain amount of time. So if you need a bathroom break in the middle of a match you could pull that off but if you decide to leech you´ll be kicked out. Of course some people will just move their character every minute, but a leech is usually not known for being active and that would mean they would have to watch their character the entire time.

Why do people leech? It´s an easy way to get some good rewards, for example in Gears of War 3 horde mode it wouldn´t be strange to find people that sit still and do nothing while the rest fight hard to make it to the next wave. But there are other multiplayer games where these assholes pop up and benefit from the hard work other players do. It´s really one of the lowest things a gamer can do, but don´t be suprised if there are plenty of people who don´t mind doing that at all! As much as you might hate a camper they at least do something, not much but something. A leech will do as little as possible to still take the rewards at the end of a match, it seems weird that people would do something like that but I guess lazy people also play games. Of course some people also leech to annoy others, it´s some sad attempt to get others mad and they hope to make an interesting video out of that.

I´m not going to say I´m such a hard worker, but I play games for fun. Sitting still and doing nothing in a game doesn´t look like fun to me, I want to explore and find things to do instead of wasting time doing absolutely nothing. Which is why I could never leech, it´s a waste of time and clearly if someone isn´t interested in doing anything at all in a game then why bother playing games?
