Game or movie?
Sometimes it feels as if you´re watching a movie, at least when it comes to certain games. It´s not just that some cutscenes are long, it´s also the amount of cutscenes and the depth of those cutscenes that sometimes gives me the idea that I´m watching a movie instead of playing a game. But is that a bad thng?
The Metal Gear Solid games are known for the cinematics, especially in the last couple of games you could already fill about four to five hours of cutscenes in the game. Which means that you´ll spend a lot of time watching a cinematic instead of playing the game, which can be annoying to some people but others don´t seem to mind that. I guess it´s ok if you play the game for the first time, but what if you play the game for a second or third time? Then it might be lame if you have to go through all the cutscenes again, which is why you should always be able to skip a cutscene! Because it´s very lame if you have to sit through a cutscene you can´t skip, especially if it´s just after a checkpoint and you fail several times (which means you´ll be watching that cutscene for several times as well).
I don´t mind that games want to be more like movies, but at least give some more control to gamers, tell the story while you still have control over your character and maybe bring some Mass Effect choices into the mix by letting you pick a reply when in a cutscene. That keeps things fresh and makes you probably listen to a cutscene instead of maniacally pressing buttons trying to skip something. But I´m not a big fan of certain scenes where you have to press the right buttons at the right time, if you fuck up you´ll have to do it again (which often means everything). People won´t like a cutscene more if you torment them with crap like that, because nobody likes to be stuck in a game, especially not because of something like that!
As much as certain games are trying to be more like a movie I do hope that they´ll stay games, because if I want to watch a movie then I´ll put a dvd in my console and watch that. A game should be a game and not some movie wannabe. That doesn´t mean I don´t appreciate some awesome cinematics or story, of course that´s nice but just keep that to a point where it actually adds something to the game instead of living a life on its own in the game. I like games and I like movies, but I can´t say that I would like it if they would combine that. It might sound like a good idea but I don´t think that it will lead to anything good!
