All I want for...Sinterklaas?
I think we all know about X-mass, but do you know about Sinterklaas? If you´re from outside the Netherlands and Belgium then it might be unlikely that you´re familiar with that. But it´s an old Dutch celebration that comes close to what most other countries have with Santa Clause. It means that you get presents on the 5th of December (at least if you´ve been a good person, if you´ve been bad then you go in the bag with Zwarte Piet to Spain) and that you get treats to eat. For Dutch families that both celebrate Sinterklaas and X-mass you can ask twice as many presents, but what do you really ask for?
I want a new console! Of course a lot of kids would like to get a new console and Sinterklaas (or Santa Claus later this month) might just buy it for them. But for those who have less expensive thoughts then a cheap game might be cool as well. Because we can´t all get the expensive gifts, oh I guess we could ask but do we always get what we want? It´s probably one of the most important lessons in life, you don´t always get what you want! Sometimes you have to be happy with what you get or with what you have. As long as a gift is given with love then who cares what it really is, it´s the thought that counts right?
But this months is known for some big expenses, people will buy a lot of things and games are sometimes a part of that. Still I can´t imagine that everyone will be massively spending money this month because the economic climate isn´t looking that good yet, so I doubt there will be any insane expenses. But you do want the kids to be happy, which often means spending some serious money. I´m not saying that in the ´old´ days kids would be happier with less. I know that I wanted expensive things as well, I wasn´t that familiar with consoles and games on those consoles but I did know about Lego and that was also expensive. Especially the big boxes with a pirate ship or a castle. So I doubt that things have changed that much in the last twenty years, the most interesting things are usually the most expensive ones. But sometimes a small gesture can mean so much more than that huge present. Of course that huge present would be appreciated as well.
However you decide to spend this day, especially for anyone who doens´t celebrate Sinterklaas it´s probably just a day like any other, I do hope that you have a good time and maybe you find a little present sooner or later. Wether that´s in a shoe or under the X-mass tree, as long as it´s given to you out of kindness and love then it´s a good present!
