The impact games can have on your life

Did you ever notice how a game can influence your mood? Maybe if you had a bad day but then when you play a game and things go well that you feel better, this is just one of many things that can happen when you play games. Games can make you laugh, cry or even cower in fear! It really depends what type of games you play and of course how much effect it has on you. I can´t say that it´s the same for everyone, some people are just different then others. But when you look at certain games then there are usually similiar responses, but the reactions might not always be that extreme. I´ll be talking about some spoilers below so if you see the name of a game and you haven´t finished it yet, then be warned for spoilers!

Games that make me laugh are usually the ones with silly characters in it or just games that are funny. Often it´s thanks to the characters and of course the voice actors that bring these characters to life, some of them have such a dynamic with eachother that the funny parts are actually hilarious. For example in Final Fantasy X I like the friendship between Tidus and Wakka, thinking about their silly conversations it still makes me smile. A more recent game GTA V has also funny characters, I like the ´friendship between Michael and Trevor. In a way they don´t really like eachother and yet they stay in touch. Even when Trevor tries to kill Michael you can see that Trevor kind of hesitates, because Michael is the only real friend he ever had. Their constant bickering is hilarious, it´s probably one of the funniest things in GTA V for me. You also have games that aren´t that serious, games like Duke Nukem and Saints Row. Especially Saints Row becomes weirder with each new game in the series, which is cool and I like the characters. Sometimes you also have just one or two characters that bring some comedy in a game, in Gears of War you have Baird that makes the Locust war a bit less grim. But what one person finds funny the other might find annoying, so not every character I mentioned is considered to be funny by other people.

Maybe I´m a cold hearted douchebag but I don´t know many games that got me emotional, but I´m not completely made out of ice so there are games that hold a special spot in my heart. I think one of the first games was the legend of Zelda: the Ocarina of Time, the story was just beautiful and me being a teenager at the time I could relate to the growing up part. Then at the ending when Zelda says I got a second chance and I was young again, see the friends I made in the game it was just a moment of thinking back of my own youth. Then you hear the song of time and it sounds sad and yet also hopeful, I just couldn´t help but have tiny tears in the corner of my eyes. Another moment that was quite emotional for a lot of gamers was in Final Fantasy VII, when Aerith dies. Of course if you look at it now the graphics don´t look so good but it´s the story and the emotions behind it that make it such a powerful moment in the game. Of course the fantastic soundtrack help you feel even more about the characters that you already did. But for me the ultimate sad scene in a game comes from Lost Odyssey. I´ll try to keep it spoiler free but there is a moment you´ll meet someone and she´s on her bed with her two kids with her, that cinematic was a difficult moment for me. I don´t think I´ve ever cried that much about something in a game or movie, the cinematic itself is already sad but then the music just carries you even further into sadness. Another moment a lot of gamers find sad is in Gears of War 3, the moment where Dom sacrifices himself to save the others. Once again it´s the cinematic in combination with the music that makes it difficult to stay calm about it, losing one of the characters that´s been with you through the other games was a big shock. The last game I want to talk about is Halo Reach, the story is just fantastic! It´s a sad story really but also one of hope, where you play as one of a special team of spartans. When members of your team die you become more determined to beat the enemy, your resolve to finish the mission becomes stronger and stronger. Especially in the final mission where it takes everything out of you to endure, it´s just a moment where I´m glad that I play games and that I´m fortunate enough to have played such amazing games!

When I look at scary games then there aren´t that many I can mention, I´m certain that there are a lot of games out there that fall under the survival horror genre but does it really scare you? I have to admit that I wasn´t really a fan of survival horror games, I actually never played one before I got Resident Evil from a friend. Now that was an interesting game, I wouldn´t say it was scary but it really did give me another game experience then I had before. It was with Silent Hill that I discovered that games can be creepy, up to the point that I actually hate going to the hospital now. Really the hospital part in the games, especially in the first two games really made me hate hospitals. But it´s that whisper, that sound you hear but you don´t see anything. That´s what gets me, the monster that jumps through the wall can be scary, for example the moment the zombie dogs jump through the window in Resident Evil probably shocked you the first time you played it, but it´s really the times you don´t see anything but you can hear something and you don´t know when or where but you know something is going to happen. Another game that is quite good at this is Dead Space, it´s such a good game when it comes to freaking people out. I don´t get disturbed by the monsters but when I walk through a hallway and hear whispering but there is nothing there, that´s the moment I feel uncomfortable. More recently you have games like Slender, where you have no ways of defending yourself and you just have to avoid the enemy. It´s a different tactic, but I can´t say I like that. I prefer to have a way of defending myself. I don´t find it scary when I can´t defend myself, I find it annoying when I constantly have to run. I prefer to stand and fight, but maybe that´s just me...
