Reality in games, where does it stop?

When I look at Saints Row IV and GTA V then there is a big difference, one is about going crazy and the other is for a more realistic game experience. I don´t think I need to explain which game is realistic and which one isn´t! But GTA V isn´t that realistic, I mean you still do crazy things that a ´normal´ person wouldn´t do. A lot of games try to approach a realistic factor but sooner or later put things in the game that helps you remember that it´s just a game, I don´t think I´ve ever played a game and I had trouble seeing what´s real and what´s not. I guess technology isn´t ready for that or are developers deliberately holding back?

I guess it´s difficult to make a realistic game when the game is about something that is clearly fiction, like a game about the Turtles couldn´t be too realistic because I doubt you´ll be seeing any big walking and talking turtles on your way to school or work. But what about a game like GTA V? I actually think you could pull it off, but if you make it too realistic then there is a chance that it will be boring, I mean do you want to think about drinking and eating every day when you control your character in the game? No you want your character to do fun things, interesting things or at least things that are not things you would do every day. Even in a game like the Sims where you do have these basic needs you do crazy things that you wouldn´t be doing in your ´normal´ life. Because let´s just face it, most of our lives aren´t that interesting and if they were then we probably wouldn´t be playing that many games!

But the drinking and eating part does bring something extra when you play a survival horror game, a game that has this feature and is pretty popular is Day Z. The interesting part about that game is that your biggest enemy aren´t the zombies but other players, also once you die you´re gone and you have to start over. Seems a bit cruel but that´s the way the game works, it also brings more tension to the game and a bigger will to survive. When you play Resident Evil and you die you can just hit continue and you´re back in the game, but in Day Z the consequences of dying are pretty big and you´ll try to avoid that at all costs. That doesn´t mean that you´d like to see your character die in Resident Evil, but in that game it´s not a disaster if you die. Maybe you think, zombies aren´t that realistic! It´s true, as far as we know in the world of science that´s just fiction. But the idea that if something terrible happens, wether it´s zombies or robots that try to exterminate the human race there will be a need for survival. I think a game like The last of us seem to have a good grip on that, the need to survive and what you´d do to survive. I don´t think any of us has ever been forced in to that position but what would you do to survive? It´s interesting to think about that, but let´s hope it will never come to that!

I would really like to see a game that brings more reality, to see the characters alive and with their own personal thoughts and ideas. As random as it can be, that everything you do changes things and not just the main plot of the game. A game where you have basic needs but also go further than just that, where you also have dreams and ideas. Maybe I´m too much thinking about the Sims, but I´m not talking about some cartoony world with humour being the main ingrediĆ«nt. I´m talking about a big world where you´re just one of many, where the game doesn´t resolve around you. Well maybe a game that is so realistic isn´t such a good idea, I´d probably never want to stop playing. But I would definately welcome more realistic games, doing something closer to what you know instead of just doing some fantasy stuff. Not that there is anything wrong with fantasy, but I always find it a shame when games start of good with realism and then completely lose themselves in fantasy. Not that there is anything wrong with mixing that, but I´d like to see a game that is more about realism then just fantasy. Even if that means I´m going to suck at driving cars!

The new consoles are definately bringing more realism, things look better and with the cameras you can put yourself in games. Of course this is still not like virtual reality, the part where you step into a game world seems to be fantasy for now but maybe one day it will be reality. When I look at the game Quantum Break then I see a step forward in that process, this game can be awesome or it´s going to fail miserably. You see gameplay with cinematics with reall people in it. Will it combine the best of both worlds or is it going to be a failed experiment, I must admit that I´m very curious about this game! Maybe that´s as much as we can expect from games, at least for now. The virtual reality like you see it in some movies is something for the future, probably not a future you or I will live to see. But maybe technology is further than I think, I mean we make progress every day and I don´t think we´ve seen the end of what we´re capable of. So maybe we´ve just scratched the surface of what we can expect in games, I know that I´ll be eager to discover more!
