Being bad is good?
The way I remember it is that when you´re a kid you have heroes as examples, you play as heroes with your friends and probably have action figures or watch cartoons/movies with heroes in it. I don´t think I knew any kids that prefered being a villain over a hero. For a long time I felt the same, being the hero is cool! But as you get older things change, sometimes heroes just lose that point of interest while villains have that darker and more in depth background that is more interesting. What made someone do these things? But it doesn´t always have to be that complicated, sometimes villains just look better than heroes. When you look at games then you can see that there is a rise of villains as well, no longer do you play mister do good but now you can be mister be evil.
Why is it fun to play the villain? I think it has something to do with you doing things that you´d probably never do yourself. For example robbing a bank or humiliate a super hero is something you´d probably not do in your normal life. You can do the wildest things and not face the consequences, I think a lot of us sometimes think about that. It´s also nice to unwind in a game being the villain, destroying things and going on a murder spree in games seems to help you blow off some steam. This might be one of the reasons why some people say that it´s more fun being bad, if this is really true I don´t know but it´s probably safe to say that we´ve all had moments where we probably wanted to do something illegal but decided not to do it. Games free you of that moral burden, you can do what you want and even if you go to jail it´s in a game and so it won´t have any real consequences. Something I noticed over the years is that women also seem to have a thing for bad guys. More and more I hear women talk about being Harley and finding themselves a mister J. Often this is just cosplay but maybe there might be more in it?
If I want to be a villain in a game, what are games you´d recommend me to play? Well I can definately recommend playing some GTA games, when I started with GTA III it was a lot of fun and I still have good memories playing that game. But other GTA titles also have some interesting villains or anti heroes. Saints Row also has some ridiculous fun characters, with you being the psychotic but hilarious boss of the group. Well since Saints Row 2, in the first one you´re just the silent flunky. You also have games where you can choose if you want to be a hero or a villain, which gives you option to be good or bad. Fable is a good example of that, I really like how you can be good and loved or bad and feared. Your appearance also changes with your allegiance, so good makes you look more like a saint and bad makes you look more like a demon. A warning though, finding a wife when you look like a demon might be difficult! Something I played recently is Pay Day 2, it´s a lot of fun being a robber and wether you rob shops or banks it´s still a challenge to make it out ok. Especially if you play solo, but it´s fun to be on the other side of the line and do whatever you can to stay out of the hands of the cops.
So heroes are lame? I wouldn´t go that far, but usually your knight in shiny armor type might be a bit boring. It´s no suprise that a lot of heroes have gotten darker in their nature, but some of them just have that dark environment they live in. I think Batman is a good example of a hero with a dark side, it´s not a suprise that a lot of people call him a vigilante instead of a hero. But with darker heroes you often create an anti hero, a good example of that is Riddick. You´re not really good, but sometimes you do good things. I guess that´s a simple way of explaining it. So the time of the heroes that are 100% good is over? I don´t know, maybe there will come a time that people grow tired of these darker heroes and long for a time where they were just good. The opinion of people change over the years, so one moment dark heroes might be popular and another time redeeming villains might be popular. You never know when it´s about what people like, these things change over time and it´s difficult to predict that. But I would like to add that heroes aren´t lame, sure some might not be that interesting but the same can be said about villains. I think someone once said that a hero is only as interesting as the villain that opposes him, there might actually be truth in that.
Does the popularity of villains in movies and games have a bad influence on people? That´s difficult to say, I think that as long as you know what´s right and what´s wrong then it shouldn´t be difficult to know how you should behave. I think most of us learn as a kid that stealing is wrong, so robbing people in a game or watching a movie about robbing other people doesn´t make it tempting for you to do that. If you had the intention to steal then you´d do so, watching a movie or playing a game doesn´t make the plan in your mind because you most likely already had it to start with. I´d say that especially games help you unwind, so if you have these bad intentions you might lose them by playing games. Well maybe not lose them, but you keep them better in check. Because you do bad things in a game, but you don´t really hurt anyone with that. So everytime when a government looks for a scapegoat then it´s easy to blame games, but I seriously doubt that is the root of evil. ´Experts´ love to say how bad games are for kids, but in truth these idiots hardly ever play games themselves. I don´t think I have to mention how stupid it is to say things about something you know nothing about! So don´t freak out if your husband, wife, son, daughter, friend or grandparents like being bad in games. I don´t think you have to worry that your granny will steal your lunch money!
