Getting too much invested in a game

When it comes to competitive games, it´s not unusual to dislike your opponent when he or she keeps beating you. Especially when you´re not that succesful. But there is another side to playing with other people, cooperative gameplay. Here working with others is the key to victory, even if you don´t like another player it´s better to work together than to stand alone. Some games might allow you to survive for a moment alone but most are definately based on sticking together and working together! It really helps if there is some communication, but some games don´t always require that because the game isn´t that complex or it´s quite obvious what needs to be done. But when there is a need for strategy or you want to be helpful then a bit of communication helps a lot!

Competitive gameplay and cooperative gameplay, what is more addictive? I think that really depends on the person who plays it, some people just like one more than the other. As much as I like to beat other people and have some imaginary moment of succes, I really do like to work together as a team and get things done. Like in Pay Day 2 you reallly are better off playing with other people than to go at it solo with two bots. The rush you have to rob a bank and then get away with it is big, especially if you get a lot of spendable loot. I don´t feel that when I play competitive games, as much fun that is it´s more of a way to blow off some steam. No matter how many people I would shoot in your average fps or beat in any other type of competitive game, I would never feel as accomplished as I did in the cooperative game. Because I find the competitive games succes only last for a moment, because the moment you play the next match then a lot of people have already forgotten about the match before. It doesn´t really last, at least that´s the feeling I have. But when you play a cooperative game then succes lasts longer, I sometimes still talk with friends about a game where we worked together and beat the game or completed a difficult objective. It´s something that lasts for me and I think also for other people. But maybe with the videos on youtube you can make your succes last longer, I just don´t see the difference after some time when I see thousands of people posting their match online. I still think it doesn´t stand out as much.

How do you get too invested in a game? Well if you like the story, the gameplay, the graphics and of course the characters. I like to feel a connection with the character I´m playing, that´s why I like it when I can choose my character or I can customize him. Though I´m not that vain I would make the main character look exactly like me, it´s more something like in the Matrix where I put a version of me as I´d like to be or as I´d see myself. So maybe it´s still a little bit vain, but I know that it´s not really me. It does help to get addicted to the game, when you enjoy playing the game and have a good connection with the characters. Something I also discovered about myself is that I´m more likely going to save people when I´m playing a cooperative game, because you´re a part of a team and you don´t leave a man behind. Well that doesn´t always lead to succes, but it´s strange that I would do that for a stranger even the ones with the strange gamertags. But this is something more in games with objectives, if it´s just team deathmatch then I don´t have such a strong need to save others. Especially when people get mad at you if you help them, because not everyone thinks that they need help. Succes in a game also makes it addictive, because as long as things are going well then why do you want to stop? Something gamblers also find difficult, to stop when you´re having succes.

Too much invested in a game or addicted? Maybe some people don´t see the difference, but I think there is a difference because addiction is clearly that you can´t live without and getting too much invested is that you´re probably a little bit too much involved with the game. Taking a break every now and then might help against being too much invested in a game, but when you´re addicted then a break won´t help you. Shutting your console or pc off and never playing again might be a bit extreme, so it´s probably for the best to find a way somewhere in the middle. Personally I don´t think there is anything wrong about being passionate about gaming, if you love games then there is no need to hide that. But sometimes these ´passionate´ gamers are just idiots screaming on every website how cool their game is and how much the other games suck. These fanboys (or girls) are usually people who can only look at one thing at a time, so they see a trailer of another game and they have to go there and say how much that game sucks. Talk about being too much invested, to spend your free time talking about a game that is so great that you need to talk about it all the time. I´d say if a game is so great then you don´t even need to do that. Playing games is fun, investing your time in a game isn´t a bad thing but it´s a good idea to do something else with your time every now and then. Because you don´t want to turn a passion for gaming into an addiction, because things don´t get better at that point. You´ll lose contact with your friends, meeting girls (or boys) might be difficult when you spend most of the time online and I doubt it´s going to do wonders for your study or job. So as a gamer know your limits and don´t be afraid to keep your console or pc off every now and then!
