Completing games

One of the first things I do when I buy a new game and start it up in my console is check the achievements, not that I have any illusion that I´ll get them all but just to see what I can get and what I´ll probably never get. It´s nice if on your first playthrough you get a lot of achievements (or trophies for the Ps 3 gamers), that saves you having to go through the game again from the start if you have the ambition to complete the game. I can´t really say why I want that, maybe it´s just some kind of motivation to keep playing the game or because I just like to complete things. But I don´t think it´s an obsession, when I´m done with a game then I´m done and I don´t keep playing just to perfect it. Unfortunately not everyone seems to think like that, some gamers are quite into completing games and go through a lot to get that done!

When does it stop being fun and just becomes an obsession? Well the first time you play it´s fun I think, that´s why I always try to get as many achievement on my first playthrough so I don´t have to go through the story again. Because it won´t be as much fun as the first time and failure will only make it more frustrating. I´d say if you play only for the achievements/trophies then you have an obsession, if you just take the achievements/trophies while playing the game then it´s just for fun. But I doubt there is anything wrong with playing a game again for achievements/trophies, just to be too extreme in that. When I first started playing on the Xbox 360 I thought I could complete games and I did with some of them, but more and more games became difficult to complete and I just gave up on that ambition. Because it´s good to know your limitations, why push yourself into something you´re not? Besides I don´t like to be ´forced´ into playing on a difficult or in a certain way that I don´t like.

Are you forced to do things you don´t really want to in a game when you try to complete it? I think that you´re always in control of what you do, so nobody really forces you to do anything. But if you´re determined to complete a game you might have to do things in the game you might not do otherwise. Playing on the hardest difficulty isn´t something everyone does and why would you? But in a lot of games that often an achievement/trophy, so if you want to complete it you´ll have to finish the game on the hardest difficulty. Another favourite achievement/trophy is to reach a certain level in the game or multiplayer, I guess if you have a lot of spare time and nothing better to do then you´ll probably get there sooner or later. But what a load of bullocks! I mean why would you do that to gamers? If people like playing multiplayer or the main story then they´ll keep playing, you don´t have to put these lame achievements/trophies in the game! Talking about multiplayer, this is something where you don´t even need achievements/trophies because if you like to play multiplayer you´ll play it anyway. If it´s about showing off then you have leaderboards or some sort of other ranking system, you don´t need achievements/trophies for that! But this will probably never change, every time I get a new game these type of achievements/trophies are there. For people that are so desperately dependant of others to buy their stuff they don´t seem to listen to what we (gamers) have to say about their products, apparently they´ll count on you buying their stuff anyway so why bother listening?

The easy way to complete games is of course to buy the simple short games, where most of the achievements/trophies are tied to completing the game and/or doing simple things. I´m not suprised that many people with a huge gamerscore or a lot of platinum trophies have completed these type of games, which isn´t forbidden but I don´t think that will get you a lot of respect. The name itself, achievement (but also trophy) already says it, it´s something you have to earn and not simply get just like that. Leveling up isn´t really an achievement, it just means you have a lot of spare time and waste it all on playing the same game. But let´s say you make three headshots in a row without dying, now that´s something that not everybody can do and more of an achievement to me. Of course one might think that this is still too easy, I guess you can have different type of achievements/trophies but at least something that takes skill to do and not blind luck or just a lot of spare time. Another achievement/trophy that will probably frustrate you is the one where you have to find all the collectibles, talk about wasting time in a game. Even the games that are a lot of fun to play seem to have this torture in it, yes I´m looking at you GTA V! It really helps if you have a map to find them, but unfortunately Rockstar doesn´t believe in maps to help you find achievements/trophies. Which is a shame, because that´s where Saints Row IV is much better! Sure there are a lot of achievements/trophies in Saints Row IV but you get a map to find them all later in the game, so it doesn´t always have to be frustrating! I really wonder if there are people who completed GTA V, well the single player part of course since you can´t get the multiplayer achievements/trophies just yet. In a way completing games is an art and not everyone has mastered that art...
