Prejudice, a sin for gamers?

You´ve probably heard it a lot of times or maybe you´re one of the people that likes to judge a game before you´ve actually seen or played it. It´s nothing new really, so many times I hear people talking badly about a game they´ve never played and they´ve only seen a cinematic trailer to back up their arguments. Because it´s not an opinion to them, no it´s a fact for these people. Personally I have to problem with people that have a different opinion then mine, if they hate a game that I like then it doesn´t bother me. What does bother me if people judge a game that they know nothing about, they just assume it will suck because that´s how they feel about it for some reason. Not only do they feel like this, often they have this urge to spread this opinion to the rest of the gaming community. This will often cause conflict with others, which is probably what they´re looking for. How sad your life must be if that is something you do for fun, but I guess we all have our own ways of having a good time. It´s just sad that your fun must come at the expense of another.

In a way I get it, as a Battlefield gamer you´ll probably be less charmed by CoD and vice versa, but just because someone else enjoys a different game then you then that doesn´t make that other game bad or the other person an idiot for playing it. Remember that this is an opinion, if you think a game is bad then that´s your opinion and not a fact. So screaming that in the comment section will not make it a fact! But you know, there are actualy gamers that enjoy both Battlefield and CoD games. I don´t think that this is a large group, but it´s still a sign that there are people out there with an open mind. Sometimes it´s even comparing one game from a series of games with another, Resident Evil 4 is popular by a lot of gamers and that made it somehow difficult for Resident Evil 5. In a way the games are not that different, both have the same type of enemy and the same controls. Except this time you have a co-op partner (either computer controlled or by another player), but already people were talking badly about it. Only when Resident Evil 6 came out the hate has shifted from Resident Evil 5 to 6. The same counts for Halo 3 lovers, a lot of them hated Halo Reach and yet when Halo 4 came out then suddenly Halo Reach wasn´t that bad but Halo 4 was terrible. Apperently opinions shift, because they´re opinions and not facts. A fact stays a fact, it doesn´t shift or changes.

Spewing hate on the internet is nothing new, it´s something that happens daily and most of these people have the intelligence of a pea. How do I know this? Well I don´t, but when someone says that CoD sucks because it´s a game for losers then I don´t think that person has a good argument. Often people will repeat it, bother other people with their opinion on every popular or related video on youtube and hardly ever come up with some facts why a game would actually be that bad. Most of the time people like to say bad things about a game that hasn´t even been released, but these ´special´ people can probably see into the future and already know how much a game will suck. I´d say, play the game and then you might have an idea what you´re talking about. So talking badly about a game you´ve never played and only saw a couple of trailers doesn´t give you a solid argument to hate a game. Sure you can say if it looks good or not, if you´d be interested or not because that would be yoru opinon. But the moment you say a game will suck because you think it looks bad then you´re just giving your opinion, which is based on just a fragment of information that doesn´t have to represent the actual game. Because a lot of times games are still under development, so a trailer doesn´t have to show the actual gameplay and look of a game. But it´s easy to hate, why bother thinking about what you´re saying when you don´t really care about something?

Have the prejudices increased? Unfortunately yes, more and more I see people judging games they know hardly anything about. I guess I can understand their opinion if it´s not their genre, if you like fps then you´ll probably not that interested in puzzle games. Of course that doesn´t count for everyone, but often people have a favourite genre and stick to games in that genre. But if you´re an allrounder like me then you have more favourite genres and play all kinds of games. Which often means that you´re more open to different games, perhaps you even think about buying a game before you actually do it. I know that not everyone is like that and that´s perfectly fine, play the games that you enjoy but just leave other people alone if they don´t share that love for the games you like to play. There is nothing wrong with an opinion but if you really have to voice it out then try to say it in a way that doesn´t offend others, for example saying that a certain game isn´t really your thing and that you prefer to play other games. But it´s probably easier to just hate, to provoke people and make them mad. Just remember that you´re not doing anything to help further your cause, it won´t make other people like you or value your opinion. Perhaps that´s not what you´re after, I don´t know and I have to admit that I don´t really care. It´s just a shame that there are so many gamers out there that judge games and others without knowing much or even anything about it, sometimes just hearing a name might be enough. But that´s probably the world we live in now, were books are judged by their cover...
