Cheap tricks vs skill
It´s not always easy to admit when another player is better than you, sometimes his or her skills are just better than yours. No matter what it is that you do, you just can´t beat them! Of course this doesn´t make him or her a better person (or gamer for that matter), but sometimes you´ll just meet people that are better than you at a game. But is this always skill or are they using some cheap tricks?
What do you consider as cheap tricks? Well I think camping in a corner is probably one of the most popular and hated cheap tricks, but some people will defend this tactic and say that it´s an acceptable tactic. It´s true, it´s not cheating and that´s why I call it a cheap trick. Another cheap trick is when you´re in a fighting game and you only use the same move over and over, especially when that move is difficult to block or to do much else against. It´s not against the rules, but it´s a cheap trick to win a match. I think you´ll get the idea what I mean with a cheap trick, it´s not forbidden but it will never get you any respect from other players. But if you like to annoy others or if you just don´t care about other people then these are methods to beat other players, even gamers with more skill than you.
So what is skill compared to cheap tricks? Skill means that you can beat others because you have faster reflexes, you´re better at aiming (especially being able to aim faster) and you don´t need to use the same move all the time to win. But skill isn´t always recognized or seen as such. people who like to dropshot (drop down on the ground and then shoot the crap out of someone) are often seen as people who don´t play fair. I guess you could call it a cheap trick, but what they do is drop down and within a second or two they can kill you. So is it really a cheap trick or is it skill? It probably depends who you ask, I´m not a big fan of the dropshot but I won´t deny that it takes some skill to pull it off. A cheap trick is something everyone could do and so it´s not special, it´s an easy way to win which doesn´t involve any skill at all.
Do you receive hatred for both cheap tricks and skill? Unfortunately yes you do, because people don´t always accept that someone is better and will respond negative to that person if they´re frustrated enough. In games like Max Payne 3 I´ve been accused of cheating because I won a match. I was just faster with shooting and I saw others faster then they saw me, which gave me more kills than the rest and so I won. But it´s difficult to admit that someone else is better than you, especially when you live in a more isolated game world. I´ve met people that could easily beat me and they did, it´s frustrating but that´s just the way it is. It sucks of course when they beat you with cheap tricks, because then you feel robbed and a rematch is probably the first thing you´ll think about.
How to deal with people using cheap tricks? That´s difficult if you want to do it fair and square, so if you really want to humiliate them then you´ll have to use their own tricks against them. So kill a camper and sit in his camping spot, nine out of ten times he or she will come back to that spot to get even with you or to go back to camp. People using the same move in a fighting game can be beaten by using the same character and doing the same thing or pick another character who also has a difficult to block and devastating move. But I never find that satisfying, I want to beat them with my skills and not by lowering myself to their cheap tricks. Unfortunately that´s not always easy or maybe even impossible in some situations. I guess you can also avoid them, but somehow that leaves me with an even worse feeling.
How do you get more skill? That´s actually not that difficult to answer, most of the time it´s just training. Play a game a lot, get familiar with maps or with character moves. But really above everything it´s just training, the more you play the better you´ll become. I would advice you to remember that sometimes people are just better than you when it comes to gaming, you can train all you want but it won´t always give you the victory you desire. So try to figure out what you´re good at, maybe you´re a good teamplayer and you can beat someone else as a part of a team. Maybe it´s not the way you´d like it but it´s nice to succeed at something. I know that cheap tricks are tempting, maybe they´re a bit the dark side of the gaming world. It´s an easier path but it won´t lead you to happiness. Well I´m not a Jedi and I have no right to tell you what´s good for you and what´s not. The main reason for me to play games is because I have fun when I play games, I have more fun when I play fair and win with skill. Maybe some people disagree or don´t care, that´s their business and I guess we´ll find out in the game world what will win the day!
