From movie to game and vice versa

I really like watching movies, as a young kid my sister would take me often to see movies in the big city so that was always fun. I hold pleasant memories with watching movies, that hasn´t really changed over the years. But that movies are turned into games or games turned into movies is something new. Well not new as in it has never happened before but something that happens a lot more these days then in the early game years. Of course I can remember games that did have those movie titles. I didn´t play that many of them but I remember playing Terminator 2 Judgement day, Last Action Hero, Batman Forever and of course Goldeneye 64. I don´t think it comes as a suprise that in those days most games that are based on movies didn´t always make you happy while playing them. Especially when you´ve seen the movie and then play the game, sometimes you had no idea what was going on in the game because it had nothing to do with the movie. I encountered the same problem when they made movies based on games. Most of the time these movies didn´t do so well, probably because some people expected them to do well because they´re based on a game but didn´t put that much effort in the script or finding decent actors for the movie.

I think if there is one franchise that got milked pretty good when it comes to making games based on movies it´s James Bond. A lot of people love(d) Goldeneye 64, I know that I still love that game!, but the games that came after that are just atrocious and don´t do Bond any justice. I´ve bought many of them, I can´t say any of those games really impressed me. Sure the graphics would be better and some actions might be better, but the games would never live up to the legend of Goldeneye 64. What I really found offensive was when they made Goldeneye 2, I actually bought that game because I wanted my opinion based on facts and real experience with the game instead of speculation and prejudice. It´s funny how you kill Bond in the first level but it´s just a simulation, so that kind of ruined the moment. Then you turn into a villain and you become the boss of your own organization, but guess what? Yes you still need to do everything yourself, so that doesn´t really make sense. Then other Bond villains become your allies but all they do is tell you what to do and I can´t say I ever felt like an equal. You´re always the stooge, the flunky and the moron that goes into danger while they sit back and relax. Ok the game would be boring if that´s all you did but at least change the story so that you work your way up! I won´t spoil anything else, but the last level is bullocks! Let´s just leave it at that, trust me that´s one of the few games I gladly destroyed out of frustration. Not so long ago they also released Goldeneye Reloaded, I already had a bad feeling about it but I wanted to buy it anyway. Not right away though, because I didn´t feel like paying 60 Euros for a game that might be crap. So a couple of months later I bought it at a lower price, well to keep it nice I wasn´t happy with the game. The story was kind of the same and yet didn´t feel anything like the movie or the previous game, maybe that´s a good thing for some people but not for me! And don´t get me started about the multiplayer, it was as good as abandoned after only a couple of months! Half of the time when you did find people they would leave and then you´d be back in the lobby with once again no completed multiplayer matches. But I didn´t like the multiplayer either, not once did I had the fun and feeling like I was playing Goldeneye multiplayer but more some kind of bad rip off! I seriously hope they leave the James Bond franchise alone now, unless they finally make a decent game!

I was in for more fun when I found out they made movies of the Resident Evil games, as a survival horror gamer I loved the idea but was disappointed when I saw the first movie. It had nothing to do with the first game and in my opinion that´s the best from the series! So why would you make such a bad movie based on nothing from the game except for the zombies? The second movie had more things based on the Resident Evil games, well some characters anyway. They did that as well in the other movies after that but the star would always be Alice. Which is great but really I prefer to see Chris and Jill then some other woman who doesn´t even exist in the Resident Evil game universe! What really suprised me was the moment in the fourth movie where they copied the fighting sequence between Wesker and Chris with Sheva in Resident Evil 5. In the movie you see the same thing happen, but instead of Sheva you see Claire fighting next to Chris against Wesker. I guess the sixth movie won´t be based on Resident Evil 6, because a lot of gamers didn´t like it. I have to admit that I don´t even know if that´s a good thing or a bad thing, but we´ll see sooner or later....preferbly later.

So why do they do it? Why do they make games based on movies or vice versa? That´s actually quite simple, they do it for the money. You see if a game is popular then some people think they can make more money by making a movie based on that game. Some people also believe that it works the other way around, by making a game based on a movie. Sometimes these games are good, but that´s not always true. I think it´s been proven more times wrong than right, so why do they keep doing it? Perhaps money blinds people, they can´t see the obvious truth right in front of them. Maybe they think that there movie or game will be different, that this will be succesful. But if developers just made games based on characters from a movie, comic or cartoon then maybe that will give them more succes. Just look at Batman in Batman Arkham Asylum and Batman Arkham City. Both games are amazing, they´re not based on a movie but Batman is of course a well known character in the super hero world. In the meantime you had very popular Batman movies but they never made games out of that, instead Batman Arkham Asylum and Batman Arkham City did their own thing and now have a popularity of their own. I think that this shows that there is a way through the middle, by basing characters in movies and making a game around that is a good idea. The same can be said by taking a game and take some good things out of it and make a story out of that. I know it seems simple but I realize it´s not, so maybe that´s why it´s so important that people don´t just make movies out of games or games out of movies.

Will there be more movie games or game movies? I don´t think it will stop, because as long as they make money out of it will never stop. I wouldn´t consider that as a bad thing if they made decent games out of movies or nice movies out of games, unfortunately that´s not how it goes. But sometimes this fear of making a bad movie or game based on the other keeps certain games or movies from being made. Which is a shame when I think about some games, for example a Halo movie would be interesting and I don´t think I´m the only one who thinks that. But a movie about Kratos from the God of War games could be nice. But we might never see that happen, that doesn´t mean I give up hoping because you never know in the world of games and movies. I mean ten years ago I never thought they would make an Avengers movie or Batman games that are actually good! You´re always in for a suprise, either for good or for bad. I know for a fact that it´s not all bad, it´s just the trick to find the few good ones in the large amount of bad ones!
