Sinful Sunday: Playing games is frustrating?
If you've played games then you know that playing games can be a lot of fun, unfortunately it's not always that much fun and sometimes it's even frustrating. At that point it's probably better to take a break, but being stubborn usually means you keep trying until you succeed which leads to a lot of frustration if it takes a lot of time to succeed. But developers never mention this when they promote their game, you just get to see the cool parts of a game but the nasty levels or parts of the games are usually hidden until you discover them and you're in for a lot of frustration!
Why are games frustrating?
That's not that difficult to explain, it mostly comes down to things not going your way. For example in a fighting game when you're unable to beat an opponent, the same can be said about racing games where you can't win the race or a sport game where you can't win the match. It's frustration and there isn't much you can do about that, because with these type of games you kind of expect it. You can't win everything and sooner or later you will lose, so if you can't handle that then you probably shouldn't play these type of games. But when you play (MMO)RPGs, first person shooters or survival horror games then you don't expect parts in a game that really screw you over. Of course there is always a chance that this is in a game, but you just don't expect it because why would the developers want to torture gamers so much in a game? Just think of parts in a game that really screw you over, that no matter how hard you try that things just don't work out because of some stupid reason. Sometimes it's not even your fault, it's the dumb bot that follows you around and constantly gets killed by the enemies in the game. Does that make you frustrated? Well I'd be surprised if people could stay calm if you endure that shit for several hours.
Do developers make games intentionally frustrating?
Sometimes I get that impression, because some games are just so frustrating! I think that developers often put these moments in games to spice things up, because I doubt that developers want gamers to breeze through their game within a day and be done with it. But instead of making bigger games or put something else in the game to keep you busy they just often make certain levels or parts of the game extra frustrating to slow gamers down. Because gamers can't beat a game too fast! This doesn't slow everyone down but it's often an annoying moment in the game that can sometimes ruin the entire game. For example putting a race in a first person or third person shooter. Often the controls for racing are completely different and it hardly ever works in other game genres. But that doesn't stop some developers from putting this into games, which then leads to frustration when you have to win the race but the controls are so messed up that it's almost impossible to win. It's these moments that people hate and that shouldn't be in games. There's nothing wrong with making a game a bit more challenging, but when the game becomes frustrating then it's too much and that only hurts the game and does nothing good. Maybe there are people that enjoy these frustrating moments but I doubt that there are a lot of people that enjoy that!
