Movie Monday: Independence Day: Resurgence
Did you expect a sequel after seeing the movie Independence Day? Well I didn't, but then out of nowhere Indepdence Day: Resurgence shows up. Which is actually a pleasant surprise because several actors from the first movie are also in this sequel, so it doesn't feel like a forced sequel that just uses the title and has very little to do with the first movie.
They're back?
It's not just the aliens but also some of the stars of the first movie are present in Independence Day: Resurgence. I think everyone likes Jeff Goldblum so it's good to see him again and also Bill Pullman is back as the former president that kicked ass in the first movie. A big surprise for me was seeing Brent Spiner return because I thought his character died in the first movie but apparently the character survived and so he's back as well! But the aliens are also back and that means that humanity has to kick ass again to make certain the aliens don't finish what they started in the first movie!
Bigger and better?
This movie feels bigger than the first movie, not just with special effects but also when you look at everything that happens. It's not just a short trip into space but actually there's a base on the moon and a portion of the movie takes place there and technology has improved greatly for humanity and you can see that in the movie as well. But does that automaticly make this movie better? That's a bit more difficult to say because several characters that you like in the first movie aren't in this movie, I won't spoil who and why they're not in the movie but it did feel a bit less funny and interesting without these characters. Does that make Independence Day: Resurgence a bad movie? Absolutely not! It's a funny movie with some awesome moments and also intense action. I wouldn't say that this movie is a comedy but there are definitely moments where humour is taking the lead and that's not a bad thing!
No part 3?
It would surprise me if there will be a part 3, not that Independence Day: Resurgence is bad or that the movie had a horrible ending but more that the story has been told and I don't see what else needs to be shown in a third movie. But then again I didn't know that there would be a sequel until I saw a video on YouTube earlier this year, so I can't say that I'm good at predicting things. I wouldn't mind a third movie but I think that these two movies are pretty solid and I don't think the sequel is a bad one, but I still prefer Independence Day more because that's the original and has more interesting characters in my opinion.
