Movie Monday: Suicide Squad
Instead of just talking about games I'm also throwing in some movie stuff in this blog. Let me start with the movie Suicide Squad, a movie that a lot of people were excited about and then when it finally came out a lot of people jumped on the hate train again. What is it with DC comics movies? Do people just like to hate DC comics movies? Maybe some Marvel fan boys and girls being assholes to everyone else? I think I've heard it all and I doubt it will ever lead to an answer that will truly explain it all.
Suicide Squad is a bad movie?
Absolutely not! I enjoyed watching it and I think a lot of other people also liked it. I think the problem with Suicide Squad is that people had expectations and when a movie turns out to be different then it's not that strange to feel disappointed, I think it's only natural to be disappointed when something you're looking forward to turns out to be different then you would expect it to be. For example the villain in Suicide Squad isn't really what I was hoping for and the small part the Joker plays in the movie is also a missed opportunity, because finally you see Harley Quinn and the Joker in one movie and they barely have ten minutes together in the movie. I think some people would've liked to see a confrontation between Batman and the Suicide Squad or maybe Batman and some other heroes would try to stop Amanda Waller and ended up facing the Suicide Squad. That would've been cool to see, but instead we get a different story that is just not that interesting in my opinion. The characters in the movie are geat though, I like the roles the actors play and it seems like they all had a blast playing their roles. The one role everyone loves to talk about is of course the role of the Joker.
The Joker was good/bad?
Jared Leto had an almost impossible job to play that role because he pretty much got all the hate there was to give without anyone even seeing anything yet. Then the first time they see his Joker it made people hate him even more, as if that was even possible. But let's be honest, was Jared Leto a bad Joker? No I don't think he is a bad Joker, actually I think he did a good job considering everything. It's just a shame you didn't get to see that much of him in the movie because I think there was a lot more to show. For example the relationship between the Joker and Harley Quinn, his obsession with Batman and just pure chaos. What you get to see is a disturbing man that will do anything to get his Harley back, which is touching in a way but it doesn't sound exactly like the Joker to me. I mean I remember from Batman the animated series that the Joker would kick Harley out of his car just to keep Batman busy so he could escape. Maybe that was a bit too much for the movie but I kind of missed this type of behaviour in the movie. I guess the problem with certain characters from fiction is that we all have our own way of seeing that character, so some people see something good in a character while someone else sees something bad in a character. This makes it almost impossible to give a good representation of the character in a movie. I still think that the Joker is a great character and that Jared Leto did a good job, I hope that this isn't the end of the Joker because we need more of him and Harley in movies!
Is it worth watching this movie?
I think it is, mostly because it shows you the unique perspective of the villains and you figure out that not everyone is as bad as you might think and some villains are exactly as bad as you might think or perhaps even worse. Of course the Avengers movies get praised into heaven and anything DC related is considered mediocre, just don't listen to the haters and critics that make a living out of being a dick. Make up your own mind and if you're interested in the movie then feel free to check it out, don't let yourself be scared away from watching a movie because of what random people on the internet say. I guess that includes me but I'm just saying to think for yourself and not telling you what you should or shouldn't do. I really enjoyed watching this movie, sure it wasn't exactly what I expected but that doesn't make it a bad movie. In fact the movie was a lot of fun and I can definitely recommend it to anyone that likes super hero/ super villain movies.
