How far would you go for an unlockable in a game?
A lot of games have unlockables, something you unlock if you do certain things in a game. It can be as simple as picking up a certain object or doing a certain move and it can be as frustrating as collecting a lot of collectibles or finishing a game on the hardest difficulty. At that point you have to ask yourself, is it worth it? Some people would say that it's worth it and others say it's not worth it, because an unlockable is usually just a bonus costume, weapon or other items to spice up the game a bit but hardly ever gives you something that makes it worth it all the trouble.
Games shouldn't have unlockables?
That's something a lot of people would like to see, that you get all the bonus items already from the start. That cool looking alternate costume? You get it from the start! Now that would make a lot of people happy, but I bet the developers would fear that if there are no unlockables then what will motivate people to keep playing their game once they've finished it? I guess that makes sense, because a lot of games are often less interesting once you've finished them, I mean you could go for a second playthrough but there is often a motivation for that. Sometime people do it for achievements or trophies, then there people that just want to make different decisions in a game to see what happens then and then there are also people that want to unlock certain items. So yeah unlockables are definitely a good motivation for some gamers to keep playing a game, even after they already finished it.
So unlockables are a good thing?
I think in a way they are a good thing, because they can keep you going in a game, if that game sucks then that's frustrating but then you have to ask yourself why you're going for an unlockable in a game you don't like. When you like playing a game then you will want to unlock new things in it and it's a good motivation to keep playing the same game a bit longer. Because without motivation it might be difficult to keep playing the same game. Unlockable give you a good motivation, at least if you're interested in what you can unlock. Just getting another costume is a bit less interesting, eventhough some costumes can look really cool, but getting a powerful new weapon is often something people are more interested in and that can change things a lot in the game once you have unlocked that. So unlockables aren't a bad thing, eventhough it might feel that way sometimes when it feels almost impossible to unlock something you really want. Unlockables keep a game interesting, even if it's just for a bit longer and that's definitely not a bad thing!
