Games shouldn't have multiple endings?
Whenever I play a game that takes about 80 hours to finish then it kind of sucks when you have to choose your ending or when all the choices you made in those 80 hours lead towards an ending. Why does it suck? Because you spend so much time on the game and pretty much want a good ending, you can get that but what if you get a bad ending or if you wonder what the other ending is? Oh you have to play again for 80 hours to find out what happens in that ending?
Multiple endings keep a game alive?
I guess that makes sense, because once you finished a game (especially one that took you quite some time to finish) then you're probably done with that game for quite some time. But if you have multiple endings then it's tempting to play the game again and see what happens in that ending, it's just annoying if you have to put a lot of hours into the game to get that ending. Especailly with achievements/trophies you sometimes have to do a lot of playthroughs, just look at Fallout 4 where you have to do at least two playthroughs if you want all story achievements/trophies or three playthroughs if you don't want to betray a certain group to get the final story achievement for one of the factions in the game. The point is that it takes some time to get to the point what it's all about, which is good in a way but it sucks that you have multiple endings and no way of knowing what it gives you and if it's worth playing a lot of hours in the game for. Not that I mind spending a lot of hours in a game but after a long playthrough of more than 80 hours I don't feel the urge to do my second playthrough any time soon. But multiple endings keep a game interesting, it can motivate you to play the game again even if it's just for getting the achievements/trophies tied to that ending or different choices you have to make in the game itself.
Multiple endings are a waste of time?
Perhaps for some people it feels that way, I don't really see it as a waste of time because you decide if you want to play the game again or not. Nobody forces you and if you want to play another game then you can do that. But if you decide to have multiple playthroughs in a row and spend more than a month playing only that certain game then it can definitely feel like you're wasting time. So it's smart to take a break, play other games and mix it up a bit. But I don't think that multiple endings in a game are a waste of time because you get something different with these endings, which can be a small thing or a huge change in the story or direction the game will take you. For example with the Mass Effect and Dragon Age game series you make decisions and those decisions affect the other games. So it makes sense that if you made certain decisions and you're not happy about them that you change that by playing the game again and do things different. This also makes sense in games like the Wolf among us and the Walking Dead game because the choices you make have a huge impact on these games, so making decisions you're not happy with or the ending you get with the decisions you made isn't to your liking might result in you playing the game again and that's not a bad thing. It might feel like a waste of time but when you invest time into a game you want to do things right and be happy with the outcome, I doubt anyone that has spend a lot of hours into a game wants an ending he or she isn't happy with. Just ask people about the Mass Effect endings.
