Games that can't live up to the hype

I think we've all had moments we were super excited about a game, because this game looks amazing and the trailers make it look like it's the best game you've ever seen. But then when you can finally play the game things are suddenly not that amazing, in the worst case scenario it's an abslutely turd of a game and you can't believe you just wasted money on that game. The hype around a game can sometimes make you do dumb things and make you excited for game that are actually not that amazing, but somehow a lot of people fall for it almost every time...

Games need hype?

Just a bit of hype seems fine with me, but the problem is that games usually come with a lot of hype and if that's not enough then some fans will increase the hype even more. It's interesting to see how some people talk in the early trailers about how amazing a game is and then when the game launches you see completely different comments, then the game is crap or just not worth your time. I wonder if these people realize themselves that they're being like a yo-yo, but I guess I shouldn't judge because I've been dumb several times getting excited about a game and then realizing that it's not that great. I guess hype is something that makes games look a bit better than they really are, eventhough sometimes a game really deserves the hype because it's pretty good, and some games need the hype to sell a bit better. Which is good for the developers but not so good for the gamers. When I look at a game like Overwatch then there is a lot of hype going on around this game, but I think in this case the game does the hype justice because it actually is a pretty good and fun game! Which is rare because often a game will disappoint when there is a lot of hype around a game. So maybe it's not a bad thing that games get some hype but not too much, because it will often end in disappointment.

How do you see through the hype?

By trusting your own eyes and ears, not just dive into the hype train and join the ride. Look at the trailers and see for yourself what you like and what convinces you that you're interested in that game. Don't get stunned by graphics because these aren't always that amazing in the real game, so a trailer might promise you great graphics and then in the game they turn out to be less impressive. What I can definitely recommend is watching the trailer multiple times and look closely at what you see, don't let yourself be fooled by all the flashy goodness you see but actually focus on the things you see. What kind of game is it? Who is the main character? Where does it take place? What is the main focus in the game? By answering these questions yourself you can get a pretty clear image of the game and that all from a trailer or a couple of trailers. Then it's up to you if you're interested in this or not. Just because you like first person shooters doesn't mean that the first big title that happens to be a first person shooter is your thing. For example what kind of first person shooter is it? What kind of gameplay is involved? (is it fast paced, slow paced, tactical shooter or arcade shooter) Once again by answering your own questions you got a better picture of the game and eventhough the trailer is probably trying to make the game look cool you focus on what's important to you and if you're interested in this game. This way you look at what matters to you and if the game is worth your money, hopefully that keeps you from falling prey to hype and buying games you actually don't like.
