When the hype isn't real
Some games get announced with a lot of hype, people go crazy and almost scream that this is the best game ever. But what remains of that when you actually play that game? More often than not a game isn't as great as some people said, maybe not even as good as you would hope or thought it would be. Now that sucks, to say the least...
Never believe the hype?
That's smart, because it's important that you always make your own decisions and value your own opinion instead of just blindly following the opinion of someone else. I'm not saying that the opinions of others don't matter, but I would recommend to think before you do something and taking some random opinion as a fact is foolish! Even if the whole world would be excited about a game then I would still recommend that you make up your own mind about that game, because just buying it because other people think it's great is a bad move. Oh the game can be fun, but it could be terrible as well. Just because one person likes it doesn't mean you like it as well. Which is why I always do my own homework before I buy a game, of course I value the opinions of some people and I will use that to make up my own mind about a game but in the end it's really what I think of that game and not what others think of that game. Because if I'm going to buy a game then I want to be a hundred percent certain that I'm going to like that game or that I'm at least interested in buying that game.
Mistakes happen?
Absolutely! No matter how much research you do and how many gameplay trailers or even demos you've played there is hardly ever a hundred percent guarantee that you'll love the game. At a moment it might seem like a lot of fun, but a demo doesn't show you everything and gameplay trailers can't tell you how you will react to the controls and how it feels to move or play in the game itself. Gameplay trailers give you an impression, a demo allows you to get some experience but it's still limited and not always enough to be absolutely certain that you want to buy a game. So it's not a surprise you often buy games in an impulse, I know that I've done that and sometimes that works out well and sometimes it doesn't. I always try to get a lot of information on a game before I decide to buy it, that usually keeps the unfortunate purchases to a minimum. Unfortunately you sometimes do buy a game that's not as much fun as you thought, even if the game came along with a lot of hype it doesn't guarantee a lot of fun for you.
So what do you do with a game that you don't like?
If you're lucky you can try to swap it for another game, if that's possible, and maybe you could even get your money back (which doesn't happen a lot, especially if you already played the game). If that's not possible you could try to sell the game, you won't get as much money for it as you payed but at least you get some money back. I do hope you learn from that and not spend your money too quickly on the next game that gets announced with a lot of hype. Make up your own mind about games and when you're certain about a game and you're really interested in buying it then you can always give that game a chance. Even with all the information you gather it's still pretty much a gamble, but that usually keeps your life a little bit more interesting!
