Sinful Sunday: Sharing your opinion online

I don't know if there ever was a true civilized way of people communicating with eachother, sharing opinions and talking about certain things without people being douchebags towards eachother, but I do know that these days there isn't much civilized behaviour online. If someone gives his or her opinion online, especially on certain sites, then you can bet your life on it that there will be someone that has to troll that person or someone else that has to disagree but then in such a way that makes it impossible to actually have a civilized discussion with that person. What happened? Or were we always such utter complete assholes towards eachother?

What do you mean with a civilized discussion?

I mean that you can talk with someone else and not have to insult that person and respect his or her opinion and the other also respects your opinion. Even when you both clearly disagree with eachother then you still have the decency to respect the opinion of the other person, because it's an opinion and not a fact. Now I'm not saying we should all be super civilized and pretend we're all so mature, there's nothing wrong with some humour or teasing. But when I look at certain discussions, if one could even call that a discussion, online then it just makes we wonder when cavemen discovered how to press buttons on a keyboard. I'm not just talking about grammar, we all make mistakes, but some people make it an art to make the weirdest comments and leave other people confused what they actually said. Then there are also comments that are just vulgar or completely over the top full of insults just because someone has a different opinion or in some cases just gets that response because he or she left a comment somewhere so he or she must clearly receive such online punishment for doing such a foolish thing!

What makes certain people such assholes online?

It's easy to say that some people are just assholes but I don't think that's always true, some people are just assholes online because they feel they can get away with that online. In a way they're right, I mean you can talk shit towards someone online and that person will most likely never know who you are or where you're from. So yeah you can insult someone online and not suffer any consequences. But why behave like that online when you don't have to? The why is always the most tricky part, because why would someone out of nowhere just decide to insult someone online or be so negative towards someone else in an online discussion? The simple answer is because they can. But it's also possible that some people just lead miserable lives and being an asshole towards others makes them feel a bit less shit about themselves. Then there are also people that just find it funny to annoy others online, these trolls make it a habit to start heated discussions or just try to bait in some responses with the hope to get a lot of attention with that. It's pretty much the same in a game, when someone on your team kills you then they will most likely do it to annoy you and see if they can get away with it. Oh sure there is always a chance that it was an accident but then there are also people that just go on a rampage and try to kill everyone on their team just for their own amusement. There isn't much you can do about that so it's probably best just to report and ignore people like that.

So you can't share your opinion with others online?

Of course you can and I think you should if you want to, but just be warned that there are a lot of people out there that will not respond kindly to your opinion or some people will just try to annoy you and others with their response. If you ignore all the negativity and try hard trolls then you can sometimes have some interesting discussions online, but you really have to ask yourself if that's worth all the trouble that can come along with it. Personally I think it is, because opinions are important and even when some people will say that it's not then I will say to you now that they are important. Oh you might not change the world with just your opinion but an opinion is definitely worth something so don't be afraid to share it online!
