The opening theme in a game
Have you ever noticed how an opening theme in a game can persuade you to play the game? This might seem weird or unbelievable to you but just think about it. Was there never a moment when you heard the opening theme in a game and it made you curious about the game or it moved you and you wanted to hear more? Music in games can have a powerful effect on players, perhaps even more than you think!
Why is an opening theme so important?
It's usually, especially in the time before youtube and most other information points on the internet, the first thing you hear in a game. So this will have a huge impact on you and it might even determine if you want to continue playing the game or not. Trust me when you hear a shitty opening theme in a game then that doesn't really motivate you to play further, but if the opening theme is amazing then you can't wait to play more! Sometimes the opening theme, or in some cases the title screen theme, is so good that you just listen to that and don't even play the game, at least not immediately. When I look at the Legend of Zelda: the Ocarina of Time then I remember how I would sometimes listen for a long time to the title screen theme and I did the same with Halo Reach. Such amazing themes that made you just sit still and listen.
The theme is the game?
You could say that, in a way I guess. Let's look at Halo Reach, the main theme is pretty intense and it describes pretty much what the game is all about. In the theme you can sense the struggle, the drums of war, grief, hope and even sacrifice. It's an intense experience that leaves goosebumps on your arms when you hear it. Talking about goosebumps, have you ever heard the Final Fantasy VIII opening theme? Wow, just wow! When I heard that I just needed to play the game, I didn't care if I was in a farm simulator game from that point on as long as I could just hear more of that awesome music. The theme, called Liberi Fatali (= fated children), also gives you an idea of what the game is about eventhough you probably don't realize that if it's the first time you're playing FF VIII. Metal Gear Solid III: Snake Eater is also a game with an opening theme that is quite memorable. It has a bit of a James Bond feeling to it but to be honest it's about the main character and once again if you've played the game then the theme probably makes a bit more sense to you. So I do think that a theme in a game can say a lot about the game, of course this doesn't count for all games but in some games it definitely says more about the game then you might think.
